 Boys Basketball

Jackson Christian 45, Tekonsha 34: J.D. Locke finished with 16 points, Aaden Breton added nine points and seven rebounds, Daniel Lowe scored 10 points, and Christian Guerrero finished with seven rebounds and 10 assists for Jackson Christian.

Harper Creek 57, Northwest 42: The Mounties fell on senior night Friday against Harper Creek.

Pennfield 56, Western 47: The Panthers lost on the road in Interstate Eight Conference action Friday night.

Tecumseh 58, Springport 47: Gibson Overweg scored 13 points and 14 rebounds and Dallas Higelmire added 10 points for Springport.

Girls Basketball

Concord 54, Union City 44: The Yellow Jackets celebrated its first Big Eight Conference championship in girls’ basketball since 2015 with the victory. Bradie Lehman scored 18 points, Cieara Barrett added 15 points, and Grace Thorrez added 14 points for Concord (17-4 overall, 13-1 conference).

Bedford 48, Jackson 33: The Vikings lost at home Friday night.

Harper Creek 50, Northwest 41: Northwest fell to Harper Creek in Interstate Eight Conference action at home Friday.

Quincy 47, Springport 41: The Spartans lost at home Friday night in Big Eight Conference action.

Western 54, Pennfield 22: Western High School completed a perfect conference season with the victory. Aubree Allen celebrated a school record for most blocks in a season.

East Jackson 59, Homer 29: Mariah Kerley scored 26 points to pace East Jackson. Alivia Warner tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds for Homer.

Jackson Christian 63, Tekonsha 33: Rennie Huff finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, and eight steals and Ella Boll added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Jackson Christian.

Boys Bowling Regionals

Division 2 at Tecumseh: D.J. Slawinski of Northwest finished 15th (1,108) and Robert Schafer of Western was 16th (1,107) in the regional at Ten Pin Alley. The top seven advanced to the individual state meet.

Division 3 at Lansing Catholic: Ethan Rose of Napoleon earned the regional championship at Royal Scot scoring 1,323 for six game – an average of 220 per game. Logan Torcoacci of Grass Lake also qualified for the state meet next week at JAX 60 with 1,177. Aaden Burge of Michigan Center was 16th  scoring 1,086.

Division 4 at Hanover-Horton: Jackson County bowlers dominated the top seven taking six state-qualifying spots. Bruer Gieske of Vandercook Lake was the regional champ scoring 1,159, Nathan Hinkle of Lumen Christi placed third with 1,101, Doug Lysher of East Jackson finished fourth at 1,073, Matthew DuBois of Lumen Christi was fifth with a score of 1,059, Adam Delano of East Jackson finished sixth with 1,053, and Zachary Kremer of Lumen Christi completed the near sweep scoring 1,049. Xavier Petty of Vandercook Lake was eighth (1,44) and Noah Dekamp of Hanover-Horton finished 16th (972),

Girls Bowling Regionals

Division 2 at Tecumseh: Casey Jahr of Northwest grabbed the seventh and final qualifying spot at the Tecumseh regional Friday scoring 1,006 pins in six games. Teammate Serissa Meyers placed eighth (998) and Madason McDonald of Western was 10th (976).

Division 3 at Lansing Catholic: Three Grass Lake bowlers finished in the top seven to qualify for the state tournament next weekend at JAX 60.  Marielle Schafran was second overall (1,015), teammate Shandi Stark was fifth (982), and Natalie Farmer placed seventh (972) for the Warriors. Rylee Weiser of Grass Lake finished eighth (966), Alexis Henry of Columbia Central was ninth (950), and Kylie McKee of Michigan Center placed 12th (921).

Division 4 at Hanover-Horton: Lumen Christi and Hanover-Horton registered two state qualifiers each at JAX 60. Layla Lopez (931) and Elayna Losey (929) finished third and fourth for the Titans. Abby Barba (909) and Arianna Uhl (858) placed fifth and sixth for the Comets. Lumen Christi bowler Selia Lopez was eighth (835), Dominic Henry of East Jackson finished ninth (833), and Alyssa Jones of Vandercook Lake finished 11th (823). Cascades Conference bowler Molly Brown of Addison won the regional championship with 983.

Hockey

D-3 Regionals: Lumen Christi 6, Chelsea 1: Luke Dumont and Brodie Gregory each scored a pair of goals for the Titans. Lumen Christi faces Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Wednesday at 7 p.m. at OLSM.

College Sports Events

Bowling

Jackson College at MCCAA Baker Challenge: Both teams from Jackson College earned titles at Merri-Bowl Lanes in Livonia. Jackson College won 3-1 in the women’s Baker games and the men’s team won 3-2. Mason Keene hit the key shot in the 10th frame to wrap up the title.

Saturday sporting events

 Girls Basketball

Grass Lake 45, Columbia Central 43: Grass Lake edged Columbia Central in the Cascades Conference championship game Saturday at Spring Arbor University. Gabby Gaydosh scored 15 points and Leelyn Brown and Rylee Knapp each tallied eight points for CCHS.

Michigan Center 54, Hanover-Horton 33: The Cardinals won the third-place game in the Cascades Conference with a victory at Spring Arbor University. Hailey Mees scored 15 points and McKynley Gaddy added 12 points for MCHS. Maggie Soper scored 14 points – including seven in the final quarter – and 11 rebounds for Hanover-Horton.

Competitive Cheer Regionals

Division 3 at Hartland: Michigan Center High School finished seventh in the regional tournament scoring 732. The top four teams advanced to the state finals next Saturday at Central Michigan University. 

Division 4: Hanover-Horton High School qualified for the MHSAA state finals for a second consecutive season by finishing second at the Division 4 regional at Michigan Center. The Comets finished with a score of 776. Vandercook Lake finished 10th in the event scoring 659. The top four teams advanced to the state finals Friday at Central Michigan University.

College Athletic Event

Men’s Basketball

Spring Arbor 75, St. Francis 57: Spring Arbor University secured a home game for the Crossroads League tournament with the victory. The Cougars outscored St. Francis 44-26 in the first half improving to 19-9 overall, 11-7 in CL action. Gabe Newhoff scored 25 points and Kavyn Robertson added 22 points for Spring Arbor.

Schoolcraft 68, Jackson College 57: The Jets fell on sophomore day at home Saturday afternoon. Jackson celebrated sophomores Savonn Campbell, Cooper Johnston, and Joshua Christian. Johnston finished with 15 points, Campbell tallied 13 points, Christian added 12 points, and Bobby Roberts scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds for JC. The Jets are 3-24 overall, 1-12 in MCCAA action. They conclude the season Tuesday at Macomb Community College with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

 Women’s Basketball

St. Francis 77, Spring Arbor 57: Spring Arbor dropped its regular season closing game of the season. The Cougars are 18-10 overall, 11-7 in conference play. Alana Nelson scored 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for SAU.

Jackson College 102, Schoolcraft 72: Jackson College celebrated sophomore day with its second 100-point effort in three games. Five players scored in double figures as Kaylona Butler finished with 26 points, Michelle McGee tallied 23 points, Zoie Bamm scored 20 points, Kyla Brooks added 12 points, and Harmonie Bolton finished with 11 points for Jackson. The Jets are 22-5 overall for the season, 12-1 in conference action. JC concludes regular season play with a game at Macomb Community College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
