January 10 Events

Boys Basketball

 Grass Lake 39, Michigan Center 34: Something had to give when Michigan Center High School boys basketball traveled to Grass Lake Friday night. Both teams were enjoying long winning streaks heading into the game at GLHS. In the end it was a tough defensive effort that gave Grass Lake the home win. Michigan Center had won nine consecutive games before the loss and Grass Lake was undefeated to start the season. The win gives Grass Lake a perfect 9-0 record while Michigan Center is now 9-2 overall. Grass Lake pulled ahead 9-6 in the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime. Brayden Lape scored 14 points and Nate Pettit scored 11 points for Grass Lake. Michigan Center was led by Jayden Watson with 14 points.

Columbia Central 65, Vandercook Lake 33: Derek Sanders scored 18 points and Nolan Schiel and Logan Fowler each scored 12 points for CCHS. VCL was led by Chris Jimenez with 11 points.

Lumen Christi 71, Saginaw Nouvel 49: The Titans won at the Traverse City tournament Friday night. Luke Tropea scored 22 points, Kadale Williams added 13 points, and Ashton Callan tallied 11 points for the Titans.

Leslie 53, Napoleon 46: Leslie outscored the Pirates 14-6 in the second quarter to pull away. Tyler Nall scored 20 points and Brenten Owen added 15 points for the Pirates. Henry Bradford scored 12 points to lead Leslie.

Western 52, Marshall 49: Maverick Hammond scored 27 points in the game and D.J. VanRiper added 11 points for Western.

East Jackson 54, Manchester 35

Girls basketball

Pittsford 42, Jackson Christian 23: Rennie Huff scored 10 points and Ella Boll added six points and 10 rebounds for Jackson Christian.

Adrian 42, Jackson 35: The Vikings fell at home in Southeastern Conference play.

Leslie 57, Napoleon 28: Gracie Tallman scored 10 points and Emma Darnell added eight points for the Pirates.

Concord 40, Stockbridge 24: Concord High School improves to 5-0 in Big Eight Conference play with the victory. Grace Thorrez scored 15 points and Cieara Barrett added 11 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Western 49, Marshall 36: Rayah Hitt scored 21 points leading Western to the home win. Aubree Allen, Bayli Stewart, and Kaia Bruneel each scored eight points for the Panthers.

Wrestling

Columbia Central at Fowlerville (Girls): Peyton Huston of Columbia Central finished fourth at 140 pounds and Bella Huston of CCHS was also fourth at 190 pounds. The Golden Eagles finished 17th out of 36 teams at the event.

Boys Bowling

Napoleon 16, East Jackson 14: Ethan Rose ruled the roost with a 502 series for Napoleon. Kaden Mortzfield led East Jackson with a 216 game.

Girls Bowling

East Jackson 28, Napoleon 2: Dominic Hemry finished with a 339 series to lead all bowlers.

Hockey

Lumen Christi 5, Southside 2: The Titans scored three times in the second period to break open a 1-1 tie. Isaiah Dinverno scored two goals and Rylan Guilbault and Josh Dumont finished with two assists apiece for the Titans.

January 11 events

Boys Basketball

Lumen Christi 53, Kalamazoo Hackett 41: The Titans won the Catholic Tournament of Champions at Traverse City Saturday afternoon. Kadale Williams scored 20 points and Luke Tropea tallied 12 points for LCCHS (10-0 overall).

Girls Basketball

Grass Lake 53, Renaissance 49 (OT): The Warriors defeated the Division 1 team in the third annual Rocket Hoop Classic at Westland John Glenn. Kate Starkey finished with 22 points and three assists, Reese Lape added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Bree Salts had eight points and 11 rebounds for Grass Lake.

Wrestling

Dansville Invitational: Napoleon won the title with 173.5 points, Addison was fifth scoring 118.5, and Concord was 16th tallying 15 points. Top four finishers in each weight class included Izayah Scott of Napoleon who won the title at 106 pounds; Trevor Ohm of Addison took first place at 113 pounds; Caden Olsofsky of Addison was third at 120 pounds; Logan Hartman of Napoleon won the title at 126 pounds and Mike Beard of Addison was third; Nate Fritz of Concord finished fourth at 132 pounds; James Randles of Addison was third at 138; Joseph Clark was third at 157 pounds; Carson Warner of Napoleon took first place at 165 pounds; Zach Bamm of Napoleon finished second at 175 pounds; Brady Warner of Napoleon placed second at 190 pounds; Dallas Smith of Napoleon and Lincoln McFate of Addison were third and fourth respectively at 215 pounds; and Jamarcus Goodloe of Napoleon was second at 285 pounds.

Western Invitational: Western High School finished fifth, Michigan Center was ninth, Columbia Central 10th, Grass Lake placed 12th, and Lumen Christi tied for 17th at the 61st annual Jim Dewland Chaos Classic Saturday. Top four individuals were Aiden Johnson of Grass Lake was second at 106; Maxx Latshaw of Grass Lake placed fourth at 113; Brandon Rohde finished second at 120; Elijah Crist of Western was second and Nathan Ostrosky of Columbia Central fourth at 126 pounds; Jordan Cromwell of CCHS won first place and Carter Mikolajczyk finished fourth at 132; teammates Connor Wojton was second and Kayden Casterline fourth for Western at 138B weight class; Gage Salts of Grass Lake won the title at 144B and Jace Smack of Western was fourth; Hoyt Swager of Lumen Christi finished fourth at 150B; Andrew Beadenkopf of Michigan Center defeated Adam Carlson of Western for the 175 title; Davion King of Michigan Center was third at 190 pounds; Reed Myers of Western finished second at 215; and Dylan Boone of Columbia Central won the title at 285 pounds.

Hanover-Horton at Holland Invitational: The Comets finished eighth in the team event losing to Forest Hills Northern 54-18 in the seventh-place match.

Competitive Cheer

Addison Invitational: Hanover-Horton won the invitational with a score of 740, Vandercook Lake was fourth scoring 593, and Concord finished ninth at 547.

Columbia Central at Charlotte Invitational: CCCH was third scoring 574 at Charlotte Saturday.

Grass Lake at Lincoln Invitational: Grass Lake placed fourth (569) and Springport fifth (557) in the Divisions 3/4 competition.

 Napoleon at Allegan Invitational: Napoleon High School finished third in the Divisions 3/4 competition scoring 513.

Hockey

Jackson United 1, Saline 0: Jackson United earned a road win Saturday at Saline. Tyler Dwyer scored the lone goal for JU. Alex Chappell earned the win in goal with 34 saves for Jackson.

Byron Center 6, Lumen Christi 4:  Brody Gregory scored two goals and recorded one assists in the road loss for LCCHS. Luke DuMont and Josh DuMont also scored for the Titan.

 College Athletic Events

Men’s Basketball

Huntington 81, Spring Arbor 64: Huntington scored 47 points in the second half pulling out the win. Gabe Newhof scored 20 points, Kevyn Robertson finished with 18 points, and Travis Grayson tallied 10 points for SAU.

Oakland Community College 112, Jackson College 70: The Jets fell to 2-13 on the season with the road loss. Jackson College hosts Wayne County Community College Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

Jackson College 98, Oakland CC 75: Jackson College scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to nearly eclipse the 100-point mark. Five players scored in double digits as Michelle McGee scored 26 points to lead JC. Zoie Bamm scored 22 points, Akaiya Lidge finished with 14 points, and Kaylona Butler and J’Ahni Walker each scored 10 points for the Jets. Jackson College hosts Wayne County Community College Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Spring Arbor 75, Huntington 70: Alana Nelson score 27 points and Emma Smieska added 15 points for SAU. Nine players scored in the contest for Spring Arbor.

Bowling

Jackson College at Muskegon Invitational: Jackson College finished first in the women’s competition at Muskegon. Sydney Nichols led JC with a 586 series and Abby Gutowski added a 577 series for the Jets. Jackson College placed fourth in the men’s competition as Mason Keene started with a 248 game finishing with a 627 series. Brice Sandoval also posted a 567 series for Jackson. The Jets will host the Jackson Invitational Friday at 11 a.m. at University Lanes in Albion.
