(September 2, 2022 12:25 PM) The City of Jackson Department of Engineering has released the weekly construction update.

E Michigan Avenue Construction Notice:

Construction to replace lead service lines on E Michigan Avenue is scheduled to commence on or about next Wednesday, September 7, 2022.

The purpose of this project is to remove all lead pipe from the service pipes that supply water to the buildings along E Michigan Avenue between Cooper Street and the east City Limits. The project will require excavations in the street and adjacent to the impacted buildings. During construction, Michigan Avenue will remain open to two-way traffic at all times. However, there will be lane closures and lane shifts. Signing, arrow boards and cones will be put in place to direct traffic through the work zone.

The first phase of work will be between Cooper Street and Waterloo Avenue. Once work in the first phase is complete, work will progress east in stages of several blocks at a time.

The street work is scheduled to be completed in mid-November.

Greenwood Avenue construction update:

Early in the past week, the last of the pavement markings were put down on Greenwood. The temporary signs and barricades were then removed and Greenwood is now open to two way traffic.

West Avenue construction update:

In the past week, the long line pavement stripes were painted on the new asphalt pavement and the lids for manholes and valves were adjusted up to match the top of the new pavement.

The pavement marking subcontractor is scheduled to return next Tuesday, September 6 to put down the plastic stop bars, arrows and “only” symbols on the pavement at the intersection of West and Franklin.

Once the symbols are down, the temporary signs, barricades and barrels will be removed and West Avenue and Franklin Street will both be opened to traffic.

Once the streets are open to traffic, work will be substantially complete.

E. High Street bridge construction update:

In the past week, the last of the concrete for the new bridge railings was placed. The contractor also placed, graded and compacted the new gravel base for the approaches leading into and out of the new bridge deck.

Paving of the new hot mix asphalt pavement for the approaches is scheduled for the middle of next week. At the end of next week, the contractor will work to build the new gravel shoulders on each side of the approaches.

In the following week, the contractor will work to install guardrails and to place topsoil, seed and mulch so that new grass can be established.
