West Avenue Construction between Ganson Street and North Street

Starting early next week, a stage change is expected on M-50/West Avenue in downtown Jackson. The roadway has been under construction since April.

On Monday, July 18, West Avenue between Ganson Street and North Street will reopen and a second stage of construction will then begin.

Stage 2 involves a full closure of West Avenue between Michigan Avenue and Wildwood Avenue. A detour will be posted that uses Argyle Street, Wisner Street, Ganson Street, Wildwood Avenue and Michigan Avenue. Stage 2 is expected to open in September of this year.

Overall construction on M-50/West Avenue is expected to last until November.

Edward and Winthrop Local Street Reconstruction

To date, new water main and concrete curb and gutter have been installed on Winthrop. Currently, the contractor is working to cleanup a tree that fell during a storm and grading the sidewalk area. The next tasks on Winthrop will be the placement of concrete for new driveway approaches and sidewalks, and the placement and grading of the new gravel base within the roadway.

Glick Highway between Blackstone and Jackson

Work by Consumers Energy’s contractor is quickly approaching completion. Currently, the concrete crew is working to complete the restoration of the last sections of pavement in the street. These last sections will cure (harden) over the weekend. Early next week, all lanes on Glick will be opened to traffic.

Jackson Street between Washington and Glick

Work by Consumer Energy’s contractor to replace underground ducts that cross Jackson Street at two separate locations continues. To date, all conduits have been installed. The trenches are backfilled, the surface temporarily restored with gravel and Jackson Street is open for two-way traffic and on-street parking. An asphalt paving crew is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday of next week to restore the pavement cuts with new asphalt. The paving work will take a single day to complete.

Mechanic Street between Morrell Street and Washington Avenue

The contractor is working on Phase 1 of this City of Jackson project. Phase 1 consists of all work within the intersection at Morrell Street and is scheduled to take about two weeks to complete. Currently, the contractor is excavating for the installation of new sanitary sewer within the intersection. The next task will be the installation of new water main pipe within the intersection. The pavement cut in the Morrell Street intersection will then be restored with new asphalt and opened to traffic before commencing Phase 2 work between the north side of Morrell and the south side of Washington.

Michigan Avenue between Blackstone Street and Francis Street

Work on the Dig Downtown Jackson project will recommence next week. A sign crew will install new permanent signs throughout the work zone. An electrician’s crew will start work to install new electrical outlets at the base of trees between Blackstone and Francis. This work is scheduled to take about two months to complete. Upon the completion of the work to install electrical outlets, the landscaping crew will arrive to plant shrubs, decorative grasses and perennials in the landscaping beds in the block between Jackson Street and Mechanic Street.


Wisner Street Repaving between Argyle Street and Boardman Road

The contractor has completed the last of the paving for the new asphalt surface. The final task is to apply new pavement stripes and arrow symbols to the new pavement. This is tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 15, 2016. After the new pavement markings have been applied, all work will be complete and the temporary signs, barrels and barricades will be removed and all lanes opened to traffic.
