City of Jackson Seeking Sculpture Proposals for MLK Drive Roundabout

(September 19, 2022 9:01 AM) The City of Jackson is now accepting sculpture proposals for its newest roundabout. Artists have until Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022 to submit sculpture proposals to the Jackson Public Arts Commission (JPAC) for the MLK Drive Roundabout.

The roundabout at S. MLK Drive and E. Morrell Street was completed in 2020 and is a gateway to Jackson’s south side neighborhood and MLK Corridor. JPAC is commissioning a full-size sculpture that represents the vibrant future and vitality of the City of Jackson and its south side neighborhood, as well as Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy.

This new initiative for MLK Drive is the latest roundabout sculpture project for JPAC. The commission previously facilitated sculpture installations in the Fourth Street and Kibby Road roundabouts, along with the eastern gateway to Downtown Jackson on Cooper Street. JPAC is a group of resident volunteers that work with City officials to develop public art projects that enhance the community.

A full Request for Proposals is posted on the City website and has more information about project guidelines and qualifications. JPAC is collaborating with the Racial Equity Commission and MLK Corridor Improvement Authority on this sculpture project. The first submission deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. The commission will continue the selection process through late fall and winter, with a goal of having the new art work installed sometime in spring 2023.
