The summer construction season is in full swing and the City of Jackson has announced the various construction schedules for the next week. The highlights:
- Jackson/Pearl Street intersection under construction, expect closures
- Work to place new sidewalks and driveways continues on West Ave.
- Water mains tests ongoing at Edward, Winthrop streets
- Work on Mechanic Street by city contractors to begin
The details on each project:
Glick Highway between Blackstone and Jackson
The contractor for Consumers Energy has completed all underground work on this project to upgrade and relocate the antiquated conduits & cables that provide electrical service to the downtown area. Current work consists of two separate tasks: 1) pulling new conductor cables through the recently installed underground conduit on Glick and Jackson and 2) restoring those sections of the pavement on Glick and Jackson that were removed. All work on this project is scheduled to be completed in mid-July.
Jackson Street between Washington and Glick
Work by a Consumer Energy contractor to replace underground ducts that cross Jackson Street at two separate locations has begun. In the past week, new ducts were installed at the Chamber of Commerce building between Cortland and Michigan. Next week, the same work will be done at the intersection of Jackson Street and Pearl Street. Work on this project, including the patching of the pavement cuts at both locations, will be completed by mid-July. This work by Consumers Energy is being done in preparation for the City’s project to resurface Jackson Street that is scheduled to commence in early August.
West Avenue Construction between Ganson Street and North Street
The contractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has placed new concrete curb and gutter throughout the project zone. Work to place concrete for new sidewalks, ramps and driveways will continue for the next week. While one crew works on concrete items, another will work to place new sand subbase and gravel base within the roadway.
Wisner Street Repaving between Argyle Street and Boardman Road
All work on the east half of Wisner Street has been completed and the east half is open to traffic. On the west half of the street, the surface of the pavement has been removed with a mill. Next week, the contractor will concentrate on the placement of concrete for new sidewalks, ramps and driveways on the west side of the street. Once all concrete work is complete, the west half will be resurfaced with two layers of new asphalt.
Edward and Winthrop Local Street Reconstruction
New water main pipe has been installed under the high school’s athletic fields and Winthrop Street between Steward and Edward. The new water main pipe was successfully pressure tested to ensure there are no leaks. The pipe was then disinfected. It is currently being sampled and tested to ensure that it is safe to put into service. Once test results show the pipe is free of bacteria and safe to put into service, it will be connected to the City-wide water distribution system at Steward Avenue. It is anticipated that this will be done early next week. Water services to the houses and stadium will then be connected to the new water main. This work is expected to take all of next week to complete.
Mechanic Street between Morrell Street and Washington Avenue
The contractor working for Consumers Energy to replace gas main pipes on Mechanic Street between Morrell Street and Washington Avenue has completed their task and are currently moving out. Work by the City of Jackson’s contractor to replace water main and sanitary sewer and reconstruct the street is scheduled to commence next week. Next week, the contractor will deliver machines and material to the job site. Temporary signs to control traffic during construction will also be installed next week.
Excavations for the installation of new water main pipe are scheduled to commence on Monday, July 11. The first excavations will be within the intersection of Mechanic Street and Morrell Street. Work within this intersection will take about two weeks to install new water main and sanitary sewer and restore the pavement with new asphalt. Once work within this intersection is complete, Morrell Street will be opened to traffic. During the closure of Morrell Street, a Francis Street to Franklin Street to Greenwood Ave. and vice versa detour route will be posted with temporary signs. Once work within the Morrell Street intersection is complete, work will proceed between the north side of Morrell and the south side of Washington Avenue.
