(May 27, 2022 12:48 PM) The City of Jackson today issued a weekly construction update on the various projects underway:

West Avenue construction update:

Over the past week, the contractor has worked with multiple crews to progress the project forward. One crew completed the connections of the new water main on West Avenue to the city-wide system at the Franklin, Washington and Michigan Avenue intersections. Other crews continued the work on installing new copper pipe for water services to each building within the work zone. At this point, new copper pipe has been installed for approximately half of the houses.

Next week, the primary focus will be the continuation of copper service pipe installation. Also next week, the plumbing subcontractor will start the work in the basements to connect the new copper service pipes to houses’ plumbing systems. The plumbing work with coordinated with the residents to gain access to the basements.

Wisner Street traffic signal construction update:

Over the past week, the contractor has installed mast arms on the new poles at the North Street and Argyle Street intersections. They also installed the new signal heads at the Argyle Street intersection. At Argyle, the last components that have yet to be installed are the lighted street name signs. That will be done next week.

When work restarts on Tuesday, next week’s work will focus primarily on installing the poles and mast arms at Ganson Street and the new signal heads at North Street. The traffic control plan for the coming week will be same as we’ve experience for the last several weeks. No changes in the traffic control plan are anticipated and Wisner will remain open for two-way traffic with lane reductions as needed.

E. High Street bridge construction update:

Over the past week, the hand removals at the abutment on the north side of the river were completed and the first concrete poured to expand the north abutment to accommodate the widened bridge. Work on hand removals on the north pier in the river progressed and are scheduled to be done early next week.

Next week, work will proceed on two separated tasks performed in parallel. The crew doing removals will move to the south side of the river to perform their work on the south abutment and pier. While removal work on the south side is in progress, another crew will work on the north side to form and place concrete and steel on the north abutment and pier.

Steward Street construction update:

Work on the third and final phase of the project to replace the water main on Steward Avenue between Wildwood and Ganson is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. This work will replace the water main under the railroad crossing and reconstruct the asphalt pavement on both sides of the rails. The permitting process for this work has been long but final authorization has at last been received and work can begin. This work is scheduled to take several weeks to complete.

While work at the railroad crossing is in progress, Steward Street will be closed to through traffic. Steward will remain open for those who live within the work zone so they can access their homes. Through traffic will be directed along  Glick to Blackstone to Ganson and vice versa detour route.

There will be no work today or Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
