(July 31, 2022 1:21 PM) The City of Jackson Engineering Department has released the weekly construction project update for the week ending July 30.
West Avenue construction update:
Over the past week, the electricians completed the work of installing foundations and electrical conduits for the new traffic signals at the intersection of West and Franklin. Next week, the electricians will move to the intersection of West and Morrell to do this same work at that location.
In the first half of next week, the excavation subcontractor will do grading at Franklin Street make the site ready for the concrete subcontractor.
In the second half of next week, the concrete crew will arrive to place concrete for the new curbs, drive approaches and sidewalks. The concrete work will be done so that the parking lots to commercial properties remain accessible at all times. Impacted residential driveways will be closed while the concrete is being placed and given time to cure and gain strength. The new concrete should not be driven on for a minimum of five days so that it can gain strength. If driven on too soon, it will crack and break.
Greenwood Avenue construction update:
Over the past week, work has focused on adjusting the lids of manholes and water valves on the west side of Greenwood up to match the top of the new pavement. There was also work to repair a broken water main and water valve.
Tomorrow, Saturday, 07-30-22, the paving crew will be on-site to restore those sections of pavement that were disturbed by the water main and water valve breaks.
Next Tuesday, 08-02-22, the paving crew is scheduled to return to pave the top course of new hot mix asphalt on the west half of Greenwood.
Once the west side top course is paved, traffic will be shifted to the west side and the contractor will begin the work of adjusting manhole and valve lids up on the east side of Greenwood. This work will take about a week to complete. Once it is complete, the top course of asphalt will then be paved on the east half of the street.
E. High Street bridge construction update:
Over the past week, the contractor continued putting reinforcement steel into place for the new bridge deck.
Next week, concrete for the new bridge deck will be placed. Concrete placement will take a couple of days. To beat the heat and avoid high evaporation rates during the day, the concrete placement will commence at 4:00 am and be completed by mid-morning. The concrete will then be blanketed with burlap and kept wet while it cures and gains strength.
Once the deck has been placed, the street work for the approaches will commence as will work on the side rails on the bridge.
