(April 21, 2023 4:44 PM ET) The City of Jackson Engineering Department is providing weekly construction updates on current projects.

Brown Street construction update:

In the past week, the contractor erected traffic control signing and barrels and commenced work. To date, the pavement and curb along the easternmost lane have been removed in the section from Franklin to Michigan.

On Monday of next week, an excavation crew will begin installing new stormwater catch basins at Michigan and at Washington. Concurrently, a separate crew will grade between Franklin and Michigan to make ready for the new concrete curb and gutter.

On about Thursday of next week, the concrete crew will arrive to build the new curb on the east side of the street. This portion of the concrete work will take about three days to complete.

Perrine Street construction update:

For the past week, the contractor has been working to install new water main pipe. By the end of today, all pipe between Michigan Avenue and Homewild Street will have been installed. Tomorrow, this section of water main pipe will be pressure tested to ensure that it is free of leaks.

Next week, the new pipe between Michigan and Homewild will undergo a week long regime of flushing, disinfecting, sampling and testing to ensure that it is free of harmful bacteria. While this is in process, work between Michigan and Homewild will be minimal to none.

Next week, the contractor’s operation will be concentrated in the block between Homewild and Burr. In this block, new water main will be directional drilled into place.

Steward Avenue construction update:

Work on the final phase of the project to replace the water main on Steward Avenue between Wildwood and Ganson is scheduled to recommence on or about May 8, 2023. This work will replace the water main under the railroad crossing and reconstruct the asphalt pavement on both sides of the rails. The permitting process for this work has been long but final authorization has at last been secured and work can begin. This work is scheduled to take about a month to complete.

While work at the railroad crossing is in progress, Steward Street will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing.

Steward will remain open to local traffic on both sides of the railroad crossing so buses and students can access Jackson High School and so those who live on Steward can access their homes. Local traffic will be able to get to Steward from either Ganson or Wildwood but will not be able to cross the railroad tracks.
