 Hanover

By Derek Devine, JTV Sports

Concord, MI– Hanover-Horton beat Vandercook Lake 63-48 on Mar. 3rd, to advance to the second round of the Class C District Basketball Championship at Concord High School.

Even while playing “uncharacteristic” basketball, Coach Chad Mortimer and his Comets found a way to win.

“We had a terrible start tonight,” Mortimer said.  “We just need to play better all game. Obviously at this stage of the season, you can’t even lose one.”

Turnovers, missed rebounds and early foul trouble were all a factor in the Comet’s slow start, but Vandercook Lake couldn’t take advantage of the mistakes.

Stefan Young and Brock Spink were forced to sit most of the first half, forcing others to step up and make plays. Kenzie Brockie was a huge spark for the Comets, scoring 12 of his 14 points before halftime, where Hanover-Horton led 27-19.

Both teams traded baskets most of the second half until the Jayhawks made one last push in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 6. Theo Boyd, 15 points, and Will Rodgriguez, 14 points, assisted the late run for the Jayhawks.

It was not enough, however, as the Comets put the game away behind Young’s 8 fourth quarter points. He finished with 11.

Hanover-Horton (19-2) moves on to face Homer (19-1), a team they lost to by six points earlier this season.   “Homer is a very tough team,” said Mortimer. “We will need to play a lot smarter basketball than we did tonight in order beat them.”

The rematch of the two will be this Wednesday at 6p.m. at Concord.
