(October 27, 2020 3:47 PM) For families struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can be an added source of stress and anxiety. When faced with the choice of feeding your family, paying household bills, or putting toys under the tree, the choice is made for you.
The Adopt-a-Family program at Community Action Agency tries to make the holiday season a little brighter for families struggling to make ends meet. CAA staff identify families within our programs who are working to achieve self-sufficiency, and then partner with community members and businesses to “adopt” these families during the holiday season. Partners typically provide one new toy and one new outfit for each child in the family, and possibly food, personal care items, or household products for the adults in the home. “Past partners have said that it can cost $50 – $75 per person,” says Communications Manager Steve York, “however, we do not set any guidelines for donors and encourage all of our partners to contribute as they are able.”
COVID-19 has changed the way the Adopt-a-Family program will be implemented in 2020. “In past years our partners have enjoyed doing the shopping, wrapping, and delivering of gifts to the families, but we realize that it may not be possible or comfortable for our partners to be out in public this year,” says York. “That option may be available on a limited basis for those who still wish to shop, but the greater need this year will be financial donations so that CAA staff can shop and deliver the gifts.” CAA will shop with local merchants as much as possible.
Secure financial contributions can be made by clicking on the “Donate” button on the CAA website (www.caajlh.org) and then selecting “Adopt-a-Family Holidays 2020” from the drop- down menu. For those who still wish to shop, a list for an identified family will be provided by CAA. The families waiting to be adopted are from CAA’s tri-county service area which includes Jackson, Lenawee, and Hillsdale counties.
Those wishing to adopt a family may make a secure donation through the “Donate” button on the CAA website (www.caajlh.org) or may also contact Steve York at (517) 539-8310 or by email at: email@example.com.
