(August 2, 2024 10:57 AM ET) The City of Jackson’s 100 Homes Program is on a mission to build 100 new single-family homes on vacant lots over the next two years by providing down payment assistance and connecting buyers to homebuilders. Community members looking to get involved in this innovative effort in Jackson have an upcoming opportunity. The City’s Human Relations Commission (HRC) is hosting a Community Housing Event on Saturday, Aug. 3, 9-11:30 a.m. at the MLK Recreation Center for the community to learn more about the 100 Homes Program.

Cory Mays, Grant Coordinator for the City of Jackson, will be at the event to answer questions about the program. Representatives from County National Bank and American 1 Credit Union will also be on site to answer mortgage or finance-related questions. You do not need to be a City of Jackson resident to qualify for 100 Homes. Initial program requirements are based on household size and income. After meeting program qualifications and securing a mortgage, home buyers are connected to builders who are constructing new homes in Jackson capped at $175,000. The City of Jackson is offering $25,000 in down payment assistance for the homes, and some buyers may qualify for an additional $10,000 in down payment assistance from the State of Michigan.

Since the program started last fall, City staff have processed hundreds of applications. As of July 2024 there are:

  • 16 homes under construction
  • 6 foundations ready for digging
  • 32 applicants pre-approved
  • 2 homes completed and sold

The 100 Homes Program is powered by $2.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds. With so much housing activity over the past year, program funds and available lots are going quickly. City staff advise interested home buyers to apply for the program as soon as possible before funds run out. Learn more about 100 Homes from the City website.

The Community Housing Event is free to attend. The MLK Recreation Center is located at 1107 Adrian St.
