(July 14, 2024 5:30 PM ET) Steve Maddalena finished the Jackson County Senior Open at Cascades Golf Course with a 3-under-par total of 141.
Consistency is what led the longtime local player to another major title. Maddalena posted two birdies, one bogey, and 15 pars Sunday en route to the win.
Paul Varner shot the best round of the tournament with a 69 on Sunday taking second place at 145.
Todd Marston was third (146), Mike Brockie finished fourth (147), and Rusty Whisman and Larry Sexton tied for fifth (150).
Maddalena said his rounds were pretty mundane.
“It was nothing spectacular … didn’t make a lot of putts, but didn’t make a lot of bogeys,” Maddalena said after the win. “I just hit it in play and then on the greens.”
Maddalena noted the greens have changed at Cascades – a course he has played for more than 50 years.
“They (the greens) don’t roll the way they used to,” Maddalena said. “I still love playing at Cascades.”
He was pleased that his 86-year-old father, Roger, was able to come out and see his round Saturday.
“He used to come out to all my events,” Maddalena said. “He is getting up there in age so he can’t make a lot of events.”
Maddalena has a busy stretch in his golfing summer with tournaments in upstate New York, Kingsley Club, and Pinehurst, before coming back to play in Jackson.
Nate LaZebnik won the first flight (ages 60-69) with a two-day total of 153 and Jim Clark was second at 156.
Roger Kuhl won the second flight (ages 70-plus) with 155.
