In a company statement, Consumers Energy announces it will suspend shutoffs for non-pay for low-income and senior customers.
Consumers Energy: “Consumers Energy is committed to the health and safety of our co-workers, customers and communities. The COVID-19 virus has created unprecedented circumstances around the world, and we have a responsibility to help slow the spread of this illness.
“Recognizing that many of our customers are in a position where they are unable to work, we are suspending shutoffs for non-pay for low-income and senior customers beginning March 16, 2020 through April 5, 2020. These time frames could be adjusted depending on the spread and severity of the virus.
“Senior citizens and qualified low-income customers already enrolled in our Winter Protection Program have already had their end dates extended through May 3, 2020, without any additional actions required on their part. This ensures our most vulnerable customers have the services they need during this state of emergency. All shut-off notices will be withheld to prevent any additional stress for these customers.”
Consumers Energy does not expect the coronavirus emergency will impact energy services:
“Our safety culture extends beyond our walls to protect the customers we serve. Alongside public health officials, we are actively monitoring coronavirus (COVID-19) updates via the CDC and the State of Michigan. We currently do not anticipate an impact to our energy services. We’ve implemented guidelines for employees who are in direct contact with customers, including avoiding contact with non-work surfaces and washing/sanitizing hands before and after entering homes or businesses. If you’re feeling ill, please do not visit a Consumers Energy direct payment office, but rather pay via our website or call center. In addition, if you’re feeling ill and have an appointment for service at your home, please contact us at 1-800-477-5050 to reschedule your appointment.”
