(April 3, 2022 12:18 PM) The Jackson area has another golf champion.
Horton resident Bentley Coon won the Drive, Chip, & Putt National Championship on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Course.
The 11-year-old, who attends school at Bean Elementary School in the Western School District, finished the competition with 24.5 points to edge Hagen Williams by ½ a point.
Players earn points based on length of drives – which Coon won with a drive of 225 yards – two chips and two putts.
He needed to get his last putt within two feet, three inches to win on the 18th green at Augusta National.
“(Putting) is my weakest skill … I still don’t know how I got it that close,” Coon told the Golf Channel.
His grandpa, Rusty, was on the bag for the event.
“My grandpa is my role model,” Coon said.
Coon finished first in the drives, second in the chips and scored 5.5 (out of 10) in the putting competition.
He qualified for the national event by winning the regional DCP in October at Oakland Hills Country Club near Detroit.
