Lumen Christi Football

Jackson — The winner and the loser will still have playoff hopes, still have four weeks of a regular season remaining with just about everything on the line.

But for the loser, well, the margin of error will be razor thin.

“And that’s why this is a critical game,” Lumen Christi football coach Herb Brogan said of his team’s tilt with Marshall on Friday night. “We’ve been 2-3 before and found our way into the playoffs, but still, whoever losses this game is going to be behind the eight-ball.”

Lumen, 2-2 following last weekend’s shutout of Northwest, takes on Marshall, also 2-2 and sneaking past Pennfield, Friday night at 7 p.m. at Albion College.

The game will also be broadcast on JTV this weekend.

Marshall is just 3-11 all-time against Lumen, and had lost nine meetings in a row entering last year. Then the Redhawks battled for a 21-14 victory.

“We’ve watched the film, and the thing that jumps out is how they run so many formations,” Redhawks coach Jason Stealy said. “They are good at what they do. We know it’s going to be a tough game against a team that doesn’t make many mistakes.”

Marshall has plenty of size, especially up front, and that’s the greatest area of concern for Brogan.

“Physically, that is a team that took it to us last year, and they have most of those kids back,” Brogan said. “They are huge up front, maybe averaging 285 (pounds) or so with guys who can move real well. The size of their team is something we have to deal with. We’re going to have to spread them out a bit and try and get outside the tackles.”

And while the Titans are sure to lean on Bo Bell — fresh off a 158-yard performance with four touchdowns against Northwest — Brogan noted how the passing game has to come along.

The Titans threw for just 34 yards in the 33-0 victory last week.

“If we’re not more balanced, we’re going to be in trouble these next few weeks,” Brogan said simply.

As for Marshall’s offensive attack, it can be balanced when needed.

In the 24-21 win over Pennfield last Friday, Marshall rushed for 297 yards, while Brad Feasel finished with 245 of those on 29 carries.

This is the second year in a row the teams will meet at Albion College.

Brogan said he always welcomes that.

“I think the kids love it,” he said. “It’s a great facility with that small-college atmosphere. It’s fun.”

More so after a win.
