(3-1-2024, 9:10PM): Friday’s District Final at East Jackson High School was the game of the year, as good as advertised. 19-4 Lumen Christi took on the Cascades champion Napoleon Pirates in a back-and-forth thriller.

Napoleon opened the game scoring the first seven points in just over two minutes. Lumen Christi responded by scoring six of the next eight points. DeVonta Habern scored seven first quarter points for the Pirates as they led 16-11.

It was a low-scoring affair in the second quarter, with Napoleon only outscoring the Titans 11-6. Lumen Christi made just one field goal and four free throws in the second. Habern added five more along with Tyler Nall and Gavrik Belcourt scoring for the Pirates, they led 27-17 going into the locker room.

Lumen Christi came out on fire to begin the second half, going on a 10-4 run in the first four minutes. All ten of those points came from Junior Timmy Crowley. Gannon Shore knocked down two three-pointers along with points from Kasen Burgess in the final three minutes. They outscored Napoleon 20-8 in the third to take their first lead of the night 37-35.

Holden VanPoppel provided a spark for the Pirates to begin the final quarter, scoring seven straight points to make it a 45-40 lead for Napoleon with 5:53 to play. Lumen responded with eight consecutive to make it 48-45 in just over a minute span.

VanPoppel added three more to make it 50-48 Pirates with 1:20 left in regulation. Crowley continued to answer for the Titans, knocking down seven more points in the final minutes. Free throws and a missed three by Napoleon helped Lumen Christi survive to win it 54-51 in an all-time classic.

Timmy Crowley led the Titans with 17 points and Kasen Burgess added eight points. Napoleon was led by DeVonta Habern with 18 points and Holden VanPoppel tallied 12. Lumen Christi (20-4) will face Hanover Horton in the Regional Semifinal at LCHS on Tuesday night at 5:30pm.

“Timmy is the quarterback for the football team and the quarterback-type leader for our basketball team. He is Lumen Christi Athletics” LCHS Coach Josh Tropea told JTV’s Josh Burgett during a postgame interview.
