
(November 1, 2021 3:50 PM) Voters in the City of Jackson, Waterloo Township and the Columbia School District will be going to the polls on Tuesday, November 2, Election Day.
Jackson voters will choose a new mayor following the decision by current mayor Derek Dobies to not seek reelection. The 2 candidates who made it through the primary are Daniel Mahoney and John Wilson. The term is two years.
Jackson voters in wards 1, 3, and 5 will be choosing their council representatives. Ward 1 candidates are Dena Morgan and incumbent Arlene Robinson. Ward 3 candidates are Caleb Blondke and Angelita Gunn. Incumbent Jeromy Alexander did not see reelection. In Ward 5, incumbent Karen Bunnell is unopposed. Council terms are 4 years.
Columbia School District voters will be asked to approve a Sinking Fund Millage with this proposal:
“Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Columbia School District, Jackson, Lenawee, Washtenaw and Hillsdale Counties, Michigan, be increased by and the board of education be authorized to levy not to exceed 0.65 mill ($0.65 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 10 years, 2022 to 2031, inclusive, to create a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings, for school security improvements, for the acquisition or upgrading of technology, and all other purposes authorized by law; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2022 is approximately $470,124?”
Waterloo Township is asking voters to decide on a millage increase for police services with this proposal:
“Shall Waterloo Township impose an increase of up to .7 mills ($0.70 per $1,000 of taxable value) in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution, subject to the required millage rollbacks, and levy it for five years, 2021 through 2025 inclusive, to provide police protection and public safety services within Waterloo Township, raising an estimated $92,553 in 2021?”
Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM in the City of Jackson, Waterloo township, and areas served by the Columbia School District.
Bond and millage proposals for Leslie Public Schools, Marshall Public Schools, and North Adams-Jerome Public Schools are also on the ballot for Jackson County residents located in these three districts.
