January 20

Hot Jazz on a Cold Night.  An evening of local jazz legends and winter beverages to warm your soul.  The Elden Kelly Trio features Carolyn Koebel on percussion and Denis Shebukhov on bass. Carolyn and Elden have worked together since 2010, cultivating a musical vocabulary based on a shared affinity for instrumental improvisation and exploration, unusual instrumentation, and original songs. Denis completed the trio in 2015, and they have been performing together ever since. The trio has performed around the Midwest region at numerous clubs, summer festivals and performing arts centers. In 2016, the ensemble collaborated with internationally renowned balafon master Famoro Dioubate from Guinea for unforgettable performances. They recorded their first CD as an ensemble in the spring of 2017.  Tickets in advance only $15.00, at the door $20.00  Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Weatherwax Hall, Downtown Jackson.  8 PM.

Jackson College welcomes the esteemed Moscow Festival Ballet performing an exquisite fantasy ballet that has captivated ballet lovers and newcomers alike for generations. “Swan Lake” was inspired by the German legend of Odette, a beautiful princess who is the victim of an evil sorcerer’s spell. With Marius Petipa’s glorious choreography and Tchaikovsky’s celebrated, expressive score, this jewel of classical ballet continues to earn the adoration of audiences worldwide. A must see for all ages! Bluegrass Bonanza.  Held at the Event Center in Hanover Heritage Park, bluegrass musicians join together to jam and to perform for listeners.  Join us for a hand-clappin’, toe-tappin good time!  There will be a special guest at the Jan 20th Bluegrass Bonanza. His name is Dana Cupp. He has played at the Grand Ole Opry and will be in Hanover to share his talents. 7 PM to 10 PM.  121 Tefft Street, Hanover.

State Champion for a Day.  All are invited to a community event celebrating the 48th Lumen Christi State Championship and the 10th Lumen Christi Football State Championship.  3 PM to 5 PM.  Community Mass at 3 PM in the Lumen Christi Fieldhouse, followed by the world-famous Tight End Club Spaghetti Dinner.  Includes spaghetti, breadsticks, dirt cake, milk and water.  Just like the players eat eat week!  Additional events with our CHampions:  Picture with the trophy, tour of the locker and weight rooms, Rosary in the chapel, championship game viewing, drills in the gym for our young Titans, 50/50 raffle.  Tickets are $7 per person or $25 or a family of 4. 

Agriculture & Soils.  Are you an avid gardener? Have experience on the farm? Or just want to learn and understand more about soil health and conservation? Then this is the event for you!   Dig into a discussion on the importance of soil in our lives, our current unsustainable agricultural system, and the soil conservation methods that need to be taken. You’ll be surprised on how much you’ll learn about soil and Michigan’s agriculture!   Admission Fee: $2 for Members, $5 for Non-members. 2 PM to 3:30 PM. The Distinguished Young Women of the Irish Hills is now accepting applicants for this year’s scholarship program. Contestants must be a high school Junior young woman graduating in 2019 living in Jackson or Lenawee Country.    Our scholarship program is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd at 3 p.m. at Addison High School.    We will be holding an Informational Kick Off Meeting on Sunday, January 21st at 2:00 p.m.  at Jan’s Dance Connection, 120 N. Main Street in Brooklyn. This is an informative meeting where participants and a parent are encouraged to attend to find out the details about this local scholarship program.  The meeting will last one hour.  Call Local Director Jan Witte at 517-592-5326 if you are interested in finding out more about this local scholarship program.
