120th Anniversary of Dedication of “Defense of the Nation” Soldiers and Sailors Monument. 12 PM.  120 years ago on Flag day – June 14,1904, was the dedication for the “Defense of the Flag” sculpture also known as the “Soldiers and Sailors Monument” of Jackson County. This bronze and granite statue in Withington park, downtown Jackson, features a bronze statue built to pay tribute to the 3,232 men of the 1st and 17th Michigan Volunteer Infantry from the Civil War, commanded by General William H. Withington.  The sculpture, by Lorado Taft, was funded by General Withington and dedicated on flag day in 1904.  Services will be held at 12:00 Noon at Withington Park.  Hosted by 1st Michigan Infantry Company B.

8-80s Summer Festival.  4 PM.  Events, Food Trucks, Vendors and more! The PTO will be collaborating with the Village to bring back the 8-80s festivals of the past!  Fun for the whole family in Springport!  Festival continues all day Saturday.

Jackson Juneteenth presents The Liza Show.  7 PM.  The Liza Show Black in America “Is That Enough for You”.  Playwright Lisa Williams presents a great night of local talent celebrating Juneteenth. Jackson College Astronomical Observatory Public Viewing.  9 PM to 11 PM.  Jackson College’s new Astronomical Observatory will hold public viewing nights on Wednesdays and Fridays, 9-11 p.m. (weather permitting) now through the month of July. Viewing nights provide the public with an opportunity to look through the new high-tech telescope to see the planets, the moon and stars. Astronomical Observatory Coordinator Talia Burns will be available to explain what guests may be looking at and to answer any related questions. Guests are also welcome to bring their own telescopes; the site has an outdoor platform area with several piers for amateur astronomers.  Those interested are advised to check the weather beforehand. The telescope is ADA compliant and accessible to people in wheelchairs. When entering Central Campus from Emmons Road, take the service drive to the left; the observatory is just beyond the softball and baseball fields.

JDRF One Walk Jackson. 9 AM to 12 PM.  The reimagined community-based fundraiser expands on the longstanding Jackson event to bring together members of the Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) community to celebrate, educate, and fundraise for T1D research.  Sign-up for One Walk is free and open to the public, http://walk.jdrf.org/jackson. Irish Hills Lake and Home Tour. Join us for a tour of some of the top Irish Hills Lake – from the best view – ON THE LAKE. Marshall Motors Cancer Benefit Cruise In.  10 AM to 4 PM.  Dash plaques for the first 150 vehicles.  Open to all makes, models, and years.  Free admission…fun for all!  General store, log cabin, gas station, vintage museum, burn out pit, train, ferris wheel, vintage playground.  Lots of stuff to see and enjoy.  Food and beverage will be available.  Entertainment and special guests all day long!  6161 Baldwin Road, Grass Lake.

Special Olympics Area 19 Barbecuing for the Athletes and Cornhole Tournament.  8 AM to 8 PM.  This is our 2nd annual competition barbecue event to support the Special Olympic Athletes Area 19. We are limited to 15-20 teams this year. All barbecue teams will be entered into the Open Division with cash payout for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. We are encouraging First Responder Teams who will also be entered into the First Responder Division. Winner of First Responder Division will receive a plaque and bragging rights. We have also partnered with the Federation Cornhole and will be hosting their State of Michigan Amateur State Cornhole Championship. Cash prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams for all divisions. Michigan Hosta Society Hosta Sale.  10 AM.  Come experience the annual Michigan Hosta Society Hosta Leaf Show and Hosta Sale hosted once again at the Visitors Center at Hidden Lake Gardens! Plants are well-grown and available in a variety of all sizes, shapes, and colors available for purchase, many not available in retail stores. Do not delay your arrival, limited availability on some varieties! Last year every Hosta plant was sold by noon. Fathers Day Breakfast Buffet. 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  Before Dad takes off to the golf course, lake or whatever fun and relaxing thing he is choosing to do, feed him! Jackson College Summer Concert Series:  Trombonefest.  Celebrate Father’s Day on June 16 with the Annual Trombonefest at 7 p.m. on the back patio. Enjoy a one-of-a-kind musical experience featuring nearly 30 trombones and a rockin’ rhythm section! Part of the Jackson College Summer Concert Series. Concert goers are welcome to bring lawn chairs for the outdoor performances, while some chairs will be available. All concerts are free and are guaranteed – they will move indoors in case of inclement weather.
