State Representative Kathy Schmaltz Office Hours.  State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz invites residents to sit down and chat during her March office hours in Jackson and Washtenaw counties. Local office hours are an opportunity for community members to meet face-to-face with Schmaltz to share their thoughts, questions, or concerns. No appointments are necessary to attend. This month, Schmaltz will be available Friday, March 15, at the following times and locations:

  • From 11 a.m. to noon in the McIntyre Room at Carnegie Library, 244 W. Michigan Ave. in Jackson.
  • From 1 to 2 p.m. at the Chelsea City Council chambers, located inside the Chelsea Police Department at 311 South Main St. in Chelsea.

Center Stage Jackson’s Youth Theater musical “Disney’s Descendants.”  The performances are March 15th and 16th at 7pm and March 17th at 2pm at Middle School at Parkside. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets are cash only, and only available at the door 30 minutes before each performance.  Youth Theater is for 3rd through 9th graders in Jackson County wishing to get familiar with theater productions in a hands-on manner.

Michigan Gem & Mineral Society Annual Rock, Mineral & Fossil Show.  The Michigan Gem and Mineral Society’s Annual Rock, Mineral and Fossil Show is our annual fundraiser to raise funds to award at least two $1000 scholarships to students from Jackson and surrounding counties pursuing degrees in Earth Science and the Lapidary Arts. There will be rock, mineral and fossil dealers, demonstrators, kids activities (sponsored by Consumers Energy), raffle, silent auction, handicrafters, displays and much more. This is one of the most popular shows in Michigan with excellent dealers. There is something for everyone and it is a family friendly event.  American 1 Event Center, Keeley Park, Downtown Jackson.   Times: Friday 10:00am – 7:00pm (Veterans admitted free on Friday), Saturday 10:00am – 6:00pm, Sunday 11:00am – 5:00pm.  Admission Cost: Adults $5, Seniors (62) $3, Kids – Students $2, Under 5 Free, Scouts in uniform Free.

Winter Market. The First Ever “Second Season” Winter Market!With over 20 of our original vendors.  Fridays 10:00AM – 3:00PM.  November Through April at Found Church, 141 E. Michigan Avenue, Jackson – Next to RJ’s Metropolitan Ice Cream.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Fish Fry.  St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 120 E Wesley St, Jackson.  Fridays through Lent from 4-7 pm.  $16.00 per dinner.  Dinner to include:  3 Pieces of your choice of Hand Battered Fried Atlantic Cod to Baked Atlantic Cod, Homemade Mac-n-Cheese, Seasoned Potato Wedges, and Homemade Coleslaw. Our 6th Grade class will be selling Soda/Pop for $2.00. Proceeds are to go towards their Annual Class Trip. You are welcomed to dine in with us in Star Hall or pick-up your meal in our drive-thru. Our drive-thru entrance is off from Franklin Street thru the alley. Please note that Wesley Street is blocked off at the alleyway.

Shamrock Shuffle.  12:30 PM.  Horace Blackman Park, W Michigan Ave & S Jackson St, Jackson.  The Jackson YMCA is proud to present the 2024 Shamrock Shuffle 5kRun/Walk! Kick-off St. Patty’s Day with a brisk run or walk through downtown Jackson. Keep an eye out on the course for festive Shamrock’s welcoming you into supporting businesses offering specials for race participants. Proceeds from the Shamrock Shuffle benefit the Jackson YMCA’s FOR ALL program. Race proceeds will be distributed to youth, adults, seniors and families to participate in programs like swim lessons, after-school programs, and chronic disease prevention programs.  Pricing: $30 from 3/1 to 3/17 (no shirt guaranteed), $40 on race day 3/17 (no shirt).  Awards: Medals for prizes with embroidered waist bag to the first place in each age group for men and for women.  Packet Pickup: 3/15 from 8:00 am pm to 2:00 pm at the Jackson YMCA, 127 W. Spin Doctors in Concert  7 PM.  A Spin Doctors concert can’t be wrong! Don’t miss these rock ‘n’ roll favorites when they hit the stage at the Potter Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16!   Alternative rock band the Spin Doctors are best known for their 1990s hits, “Two Princes,” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong.” These peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 charts at #7 and #17. While there were many blues rockers around New York in the early ‘90s, only the Spin Doctors made it big. Cleverly written singles with pop-blues melodies caught on. Their album “Pocket Full of Kryptonite” was around nearly a year before MTV and radio picked it up. They began playing “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and the iconic “Two Princes.” Once the songs were out, their popularity couldn’t be stopped. The Spin Doctors became something of an overnight sensation, selling millions of albums around the world. The album sold over five million copies in the U.S. and another five million overseas. Monday’s Supper Celtic Quartet.  On March 16, Tecumseh Center for the Arts hosts MONDAY’S SUPPER, three-time “Top Duo” Irish Music Award Nominee, and winner of the 2014 Celtic Album of the Year. With five albums together, Siusan O’Rourke and Zig Zeitler will bring their music to our stage in celebration of the High Holy Day in March. Monday’s Supper is celebrated for their ability to morph seamlessly from treasured, timeless songs to contemporary, from Irish traditional to American roots, bringing their audiences an evening of music that is fully experienced and long cherished.  Info and tickets here.

JSO Music on Tap:  Irish Festival.  Dàimh, the Gaelic word for Connection, perfectly describes the electrifying musical interplay between this band’s individual members and portrays the interaction with audiences attending their breathtaking live shows around the world.
