Standing on the Shoulders of Giants”, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  10 AM to 11:30 AM. Virtual event via Zoom.  Jackson County Branch NAACP presents this Dr. Martin Luther King Day Event with Keynote Speaker Dr. Pamela Pugh from the Michigan Department of Education. Dr. Pugh was elected to the State of Michigan Board of Education in 2014, currently serving as Vice President. From 2016 to 2019 Dr. Pugh served as the Chief Public Health Advisor for the city of Flint. Dr. Pugh is also founder of Regeneration LLC, a business that serves as a catalyst for economically sustainable and healthy urban communities by assisting public agencies, organizations, and businesses in building capacity through effective operations and winning partnerships.  Register and join here. How They See Us.  MLK Day of Service Event.  1:30 PM.  Virtual.  Hosted by Jackson College.  Implicit bias, sometimes called unconscious bias, refers to attitudes and beliefs that occur outside of our conscious awareness and control. However, unconscious beliefs and actions have very real effects for other people.  Learn more about implicit bias when Jackson College hosts a virtual panel discussion for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, “How They See Us,” at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17. Hosting the event will be Daniel Mahoney, affinity liaison to the African-American community with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging, and Director of Multicultural Affairs Antoine Breedlove. The Offices of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity, Equity and Belonging are presenting the event. Panelists will include:

  • Walter Forbes, a Michigan man who spent nearly four decades incarcerated before he was freed in 2020 when a key witness recanted her testimony, admitting to lying.
  • George Lyons, George D. Lyons & Associates, attorney at law.
  • Megan Richardson, Michigan Innocence Clinic, University of Michigan Law School.
  • Bobby Beauchamp, Director, Jackson College Corrections Education Program.

Jackson College Winter Film Series.  “The Green Knight”.   Doors open at 6:30 pm. Auditorium doors open at 7 pm. Film begins at 7:15 pm. Admission is $5. Michigan Theatre Members receive a medium combo (medium popcorn/medium soft drink or water).  Michigan Theatre, Downtown Jackson.

Winter Learning Series at the Jackson YMCA.  11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  Join us Monday, January 17 in the Beaman lounge at 11:30 am for our third speaker in our Winter Learning Series, Jenna Chmielewski, Senior Real Estate Specialist with ERA Reardon Realty. Jenna will be speaking on, “Rightsizing Your Life.” An expert in the senior and housing markets she will share the best practices for rightsizing your life for whatever stage of life you are in.  We are excited to bring this NEW, FREE series to our members and the Jackson community. This series takes place every Monday for the next three months beginning in January. All are welcome; topics are geared for active older adults but can benefit others. Snacks, beverages and prizes.
