Center Stage Jackson presents The Guys.    Fri-Sat-Sun, Sept. 10-11-12  (Friday and Saturday at 7 PM; Sunday at 3 PM).  Less than two weeks after the September 11th attacks, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms—and the enduring bonds of common humanity.

THE GUYS is based on a true story.  This production at the Michigan Theatre is a benefit for the Jackson County Fire Chiefs Association which provides financial support and materials for fire department candidates all over Jackson County. Tickets are $15. www.centerstagejackson.org/theguys

GREAT’s Annual Grand River Cleanup.  9 AM to 2 PM.  Grand River Environmental Action Team (GREAT) needs volunteers for our annual river clean-up. Come join us in doing something GREAT for the river!  This event can only be successful with volunteers like you.  There are a number of changes in the clean-up this year due to Covid-19.  We will meet at R.A. Greene Park, located at 2995 Lansing Avenue, Jackson, one-half mile south of Parnall Rd, at 9:00am.  A map of R.A. Greene Park is  on our website at www.great-mi.org.  The clean-up will be accomplished by sending canoes both upstream and downstream from the park and then returning back to the launch site.  This helps us maintain social distancing by not having to shuttle volunteers.  Other volunteers will drive their own vehicles to selected locations along the river to walk the banks for debris. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and getting dirty. We also recommend a hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.  Gloves, tools and PFD’s will be provided.  Lunch will not be provided this year due to Covid-19, only drinks and snacks.

We also need help with the following specialized jobs:

·         Be a Team Leader to help guide 8 canoes with 16 paddlers on the river.

·         Registration of volunteers.

·         Distribute clean-up equipment to the workers.

Please contact Jack L. Ripstra by email at jlripstra@aol.com or by phone at 517-740-5680 if you can help with one of these jobs.

Check out www.great-mi.org for more details or call 517-740-5680.

We look forward to seeing you at this event!

Blue Mass at St. Mary’s.  On Saturday September 11th we will mark the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack ever to occur on American soil.  On that day when planes were crashing into buildings and buildings were crumbling to the ground, everyone was trying to escape who found themselves in harm’s way, except for the police and fire departments who went rushing into those burning buildings and up those stairs to save lives.  412 emergency workers lost their lives that day.  We will honor them.  We will not forget.   The Jackson District Knights of Columbus are hosting a Blue Mass on Saturday September 11, 2021 at St Mary Star of the Sea Church located at 120 E Wesley Street, Jackson, MI 49201. The Mass begins at 5:30 pm.  A Blue Mass is to honor, thank, and pray for the safety of all First Responders, the police, firefighters, and emergency medical responders, the men and women who risk their lives daily to protect the Jackson community.  All Jackson County area Public Safety Departments personnel have been invited but we would like to send a personal invitation to all first responders and your family that are members of Queens to attend this Mass on September 11th at St Mary’s.  After the Mass, there will be a delicious dinner in Star Hall at St. Mary’s provided by the Knights.  The Jackson area Knights of Columbus hope many of you will attend so we can show our appreciation and pray for their safety.
