Winter Reading Challenge.  The Jackson District Library encourages you to bundle up with a book and join our winter reading challenge. It’s just like our Summer Reading Program … only colder!  Continuing through Mar. 15, JDL is hosting a winter reading challenge to promote a healthy reading habit. Join the program on the library’s website at the link here.  Reading just 25 minutes a day will result in a total of 18 hours of reading come Mar. 15, and a total of eight entries into our grand prize drawing for a Visa gift card.  After reading for four hours, each reader will receive a coffee mug and will be entered into a drawing to win our grand prize gift card. Every additional two hours read will earn readers another entry into the grand prize drawing. Prizes will be mailed to your address associated with your JDL library card – please make sure that your information is up-to-date before the end of the program.

Red Cross Blood Drives.  The American Red Cross and the National Football League are teaming up this January, during National Blood Donor Month, to urge individuals – especially those who have recovered from COVID-19 – to give blood and to help tackle the national convalescent plasma shortage. Right now, more donors are needed to help hospital patients.  During this critical time, the Red Cross and NFL are thrilled to offer all those who come to donate an opportunity to receive a special thank you this month. Those who come to donate blood or platelets this January will be automatically entered to win two tickets to next year’s Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles.* In addition, those who come to give January 1-20, will also be automatically entered to win the Big Game at Home package for an awesome viewing experience safely at home, with a 65-inch television and a $500 gift card to put toward food and fun.**  Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood today with the American Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa.

Frida Kahlo’s Garden Exhibit at Ella Sharp Museum.  Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is considered one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. Her body of work, consisting of some 250 paintings and drawings, is at once intensely personal and universal in scope, and relies heavily on the natural world.  The exhibition “Frida Kahlo’s Garden”, presented by Ella Sharp Museum in partnership with Jackson School of the Arts, transports visitors to Kahlo’s garden to experience her world of inspiration as she did.  The exhibition features several freestanding units focused on thematic areas incorporating a selection of objects, artifacts, photographs, and paper ephemera; audio/video features; interactive stations; and wall-mounted graphics.  This exhibition is made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Frida Kahlo’s Garden is adapted from the exhibition, FRIDA KAHLO: ART, GARDEN, LIFE, organized by guest curator Adriana Zavala at The New York Botanical Garden. It was made possible with major funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Karen Katen Foundation, The LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, MetLife Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and Gillian and Robert Steel. It was adapted and toured for NEH on the Road by the Mid-America Arts Alliance.  ON VIEW AT ELLA SHARP MUSEUM  January 28 – March 16, 2021  Learn More: ellasharpmuseum.org/exhibits/frida-kahlos-garden/
