Try Hockey for Free. 6 PM. This Try Hockey for Free event is designed to provide kids ages 4 to 9 the opportunity to try hockey in a FUN, safe environment with trained coaching staff. No experience necessary! There will be plenty of assistance on hand to be sure your child has the best first hockey experience and answer any questions you might have. National S’Mores Day. 4 PM to 7 PM. Celebrate National S’mores Day the Girl Scout way! Did you know the first s’mores recipe was published in a Girl Scout guidebook from 1927? That’s right, making s’mores around a campfire is a time-honored Girl Scout tradition. Come visit on Wednesday, August 10, and enjoy a variety of s’mores recipes, play games, make a craft, do STEM activities, and more! Not a Girl Scout yet? No worries! Project Fresh. 10 AM to 3 PM. Join Jackson County WIC’s Project Fresh event and come purchase produce from local farmers. WIC, the health department, and community partners will be present with activities and local resources! Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children ages 1-5 enrolled in WIC can receive $25 Project Fresh Coupons per family to be used at farmers’ markets. Childhood Lead Blood Testing Clinic. Childhood lead poisoning prevention is a serious environmental health concern for young children and is entirely preventable. In an effort to assist parents in having their children tested for blood lead, the Jackson County Health Department has scheduled two FREE separate blood lead clinics. An appointment is needed for your child’s blood lead test and you will get their results and information before you leave. In addition, you will also receive a referral for confirmatory testing if needed. These tests can only provide information on recent or chronic (ongoing) exposure. Kids Yoga by the Lake. Grass Lake Park. 6:30 PM – 7:15 PM. Celebrating our 5th summer of kids yoga by the lake!! Join Cindy Caro (after you hit the farmers market) for a fun interactive yoga session by the lake at Grass Lake Park. We will practice yoga poses, dance, and play in a beautiful outdoor setting. Adventurous parents and caregivers are invited to join in on the fun as well but not necessary. Recommended for children ages 3-12 but all ages welcome. Bring a yoga mat or towel. Hearing & Vision Clinic. The Jackson County Health Department is hosting Hearing & Vision Clinics every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during July and August from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. Clinic times are available by appointment only. There is no cost and the clinic is open to everyone, infants through adults. Navajo Code Talkers. Join the Jackson District Library for a virtual presentation by Laura Tohe, the daughter of a WWII Navajo Code Talker. This event will take place on Zoom and Facebook Live. For the Zoom link, click here. Who are the Navajo Code Talkers? The Navajo Code Talkers are often-forgotten heroes of World War II. The Navajo created an unbreakable code, using their indigenous language to transmit sensitive information during the war. The code helped win the war in the Pacific and, undoubtedly, saved thousands of lives.
Library of Things. Starting this month, the Jackson District Library will have a Library of Things! A Library of Things offers non-traditional library items for check-out, and the first items in our collection are STEM kits. These kits contain projects and materials for a range of school-aged kids to explore STEM activities at home.
