Northwest 10, Columbia Central 0: Northwest scored six time in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn the five-inning win. Gage Race earned the pitching win throwing a no-hitter and striking out nine of the 15 batters he faced on the mound. Douglas Putnam knocked in two runs and had a pair of hits for Northwest. Nick Wilding struck out two batters for the Golden Eagles.
Northwest 15, Columbia Central 2: Will Herman and Alex Thrun combined for a four-hitter for the Mounties. Ethan Anspaugh went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Northwest (3-1). The Golden Eagles (0-2) were led by Cameron Adams with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Whitmore Lake 5, Grass Lake 3: Avin Sandoval and Blake Stark both recorded two hits for Grass Lake (0-1).
Western 13, Napoleon 2: Caden Oliver and David McAninch both had two hits for the Panthers in the win. Western scored five times in the first inning and seven times in the seventh inning to close out the game. Cohen Spitzer had a big double in the seventh inning for Western. Napoleon was limited to four hits in the contest.
Napoleon 7, Western 2: Napoleon scored five runs in the final two innings to pull out the win.
Softball
Lumen Christi 20, Potterville 14: Ava Cumberworth had three hits and knocked in three runs for Lumen Christi (1-2). Kadence Hinkley and Olivia Berner also had two hits apiece. Game two was called in the third inning due to darkness. Allision O’Dowd had a double, home run, and four RBIs in the contest.
Napoleon 3, Western 1: Alyssa Budd had two hits to lead Napoleon. Western could only muster three hits in the loss. Raye Burke earned the win for the Pirates.
Napoleon 8, Western 6: Kaylee Smith had a walk-off home run for the Pirates in the win. Maggie Beer, Elisse Omey, Alyssa Budd, and Karson Fairbanks had multiple hits for Napoleon. Ashley Sturgill recorded three hits and knocked in two runs for Western.
Girls soccer
Jackson 6, Northwest 3: Offenses dominated the first half as the two team combined for seven goals in the first 40 minutes of action. But the defenses settled down in the second half. Piper Darrow scored the first goal of the game for NWHS four minutes into the contest. But Jackson scored the next four goals by Sydney Langley, Abby Hunt, Rylie Dubois, and Amelia Jones. The Mounties scored twice in a 30-second period on goals by Morgan Elledge and Kenzie Noon. Jackson led 4-3 at the end of the first half. “We didn’t change anything in the second half … we just look to take away the space,” JHS Coach Travis Baker said. Trystin Cline and Langley scored goals for Jackson in the second half. Jackson finished with 12 shots on goal and Northwest had 10. Delaney Jones recorded seven saves for JHS and Leah Alfred finished with six saves for NWHS.
Grass Lake 5, Columbia Central 1: Ella Kraus and Cassidy Ortbring scored two goals apiece for Grass Lake. Jessica Jonaitis scored one goal, Kylin Heidrich added a couple of assists, and Karly Penhallegon earned the win in goal for the Warriors. Jaden Bates scored the only goal for CCHS (1-1).
Ann Arbor Greenhills 13, Hanover-Horton 0: The Comets lost to the perennial powerhouse soccer program from Ann Arbor at home to start the season.
Lakeview 2, Western 1: The Panthers fell to 0-2 with another 2-1 loss to open the season.
