Boys Basketball

Hanover-Horton 55, Union City 37: The Comets improved to 5-2 after back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday nights. Luke Soper scored 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished three assists and Logan Blackledge finished with 17 points for Hanover-Horton. 

Jackson 65, Northwest 60: Cyron Stamper scored 15 points and Darrion Weller and Berkley Drummond added 10 points apiece for Jackson (5-1).

Girls Basketball

Hanover-Horton 58, Jackson 33: The Comets won the contest played at Albion College Invitational Saturday night. Maggie Soper scored 20 points and Tracy Ackley added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Hanover-Horton. Morgan Kuhl finished with 10 rebounds and five assists for the Comets. Jackson was led by Akaiya Lidge with 19 points. 

Wrestling

Fowlerville Invitational: Springport High School finished fifth (77.5), East Jackson was eighth (54), and Columbia Central placed 10th (30.5) in the 18-team event. Top six weight class placers were: Jacob Potter of Springport was fifth at 106; Roberto Mireles of East Jackson finished third, Owen Thomas of Springport was fourth, and Christian Millican of CCHS was sixth at 120 pounds; Nathan Ostrosky of Columbia was fourth at 126 pounds; Dylan Byrd of EJHS was second at 138 pounds; Rylinn Hale was second at 150 for Springport; Kaden Sizemore of Springport won the title at 157 pounds and Brock Davidson was fourth in that weight class; Colton Raffensburger of East Jackson finished third at 165 pounds and Caleb Wendt placed fifth in the same weight class; Patrick Cumbreth of Springport finished fifth at 175 pounds; Tyler Carpenter of Springport finished sixth at 190 pounds; and Dylan Boone of CCHS was fourth at 285 pounds. 

Sand Creek Invitational: Top six placers for Jackson County teams were: Aiden Johnson and Cooper Riddle of Grass Lake finished third and fourth respectively at 106 pounds; Eden Nguyen of Jackson was second at 113 pounds; Brandon Rohde of Grass Lake finished second at 120 pounds; Justice Payne of Grass Lake placed fifth at 132 pounds; Caden Bayer of Jackson finished first and teammate Zander Resor was third at 138 pounds; Collin Thompson of Concord won the title at 150 pounds, Antonio Williams of Jackson finished second and teammate Andrew Anderson finished fourth at the same weight class; Braeden Resor of Jackson finished fifth at 165 pounds; Shea Haehnle of Jackson was third at 175 pounds; Jack Reid of Grass Lake was the champion at 190 pounds, Malik Sharlow of Jackson finished fourth and Rollen Smith of Concord was sixth in the same weight class; and Curtis Winters of Jackson won the title at 285 pounds and teammate Reece Deshazor was fifth in the same weight class. Jackson finished second overall with 163 points, Grass Lake was ninth scoring 88 points, and Concord finished 12th with 48.5 points. 

Hanover-Horton at Belding Invitational: Hanover-Horton defeated Belding 30-27 but lost to Fremont 53-30 in the only two recorded matches for the Comets at the Belding Invitational. A.J. Fielder earned a pair of pins in the two matches.  

Lumen Christi at Gull Lake Invitational: Lumen Christi finished 15th as a team with 22 points at Gull Lake. Hayden Rhinehart was the Titan’s highest finisher with a seventh-place finish at 215 pounds. 

Michigan Center at Skyline Invitational: Top six placers for the Cardinals were:  Carter Mikolajczyk finished fifth at 126 pounds; Ashton Bristow placed fourth at 132 pounds; George Masters finished fifth at 150 pounds; Blake Short was second at 175 pounds; Chase Short won the title at 190 pounds for MCHS; and DeJay Porter placed third at 285 pounds. Michigan Center finished sixth in the team competition with 136.5 points. 

Northwest, Napoleon at Brighton Invitational: Napoleon High School went 1-4 on the day with a victory over DeWitt 44-36. Northwest defeated the Pirates 58-18. The Mounties finished 2-3 on the day with a 70-12 win over DeWitt.  

Parchment Invitational: Jordyan Metcalf of Concord High School finished second at 135 pounds in the girls’ tournament at Parchment. Selena Garcia of Hanover-Horton finished fourth at 170 pounds.

Pinckney Invitational: Western High School finished third at the annual Seasons Beatings tournament at Pinckney. The Panthers were 3-0 in pool play but lost to Greenville 60-12 in the final. Eli Crist at 126 pounds and Alex Trudell at 190 pounds were 5-0 on the day to earn medals.

Competitive Cheer

Onsted Invitational: Michigan Center High School finished second (699) and Grass Lake was seventh (562) in the Division 4 competition at Onsted. Hudson won the Division 4 competition (727) and Onsted won the Division 3 event (703). Fourteen schools participated in the annual event. 

Hockey

Jake King

Sault St. Marie 4, Lumen Christi 3: The Titans found themselves down 4-1 after two periods but battled back at the Ferris State Tournament. Goals were scored by Jake King and Luke Sexton for the Titans (3-1-1). 

College Athletic Events

Women’s Basketball

Jackson College 101, Terra State 53:  The Jets hit the century mark for the first time this season with a home win Saturday against Terra State. Four players scored in double digits as Kaylona Butler scored 24 points, Zoie Bamm scored 22 points on 11-for-13 shooting, Olivia McDavid scored 15 points, and  Dharyauna Pierce added 12 points for Jackson College. JC had a better shooting percentage from 3-point shots (51.9 percent) than at the free throw line (50 percent). Kiyla Brooks dished six assists and created four steals for Jackson College (11-1). Jackson is off until Saturday, Jan. 6, when they host Mid Michigan College at home beginning at 1 p.m. 

Men’s Basketball

Jackson College 89, Terra State 81: The Jets recovered from a double-digit deficit in the first half to pull out the home win. Six players scored in double figures for Jackson led by Brayden Pearson with 20 points. Savonn Campbell scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds, Kamerin Carter scored 13 points, Aiden Burns and Xavier Ford-Belton each scored 12 points, and Jay Wambere scored 10 points and dished five assists for Jackson College.  The Jets are 6-5 overall and will host Bryant and Stratton of Ohio Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
