Girls Basketball

Springport 52, Olivet 38: The Spartans improved to 13-3 overall on the season with the home win. Springport outscored Olivet 20-12 in the pivotal fourth quarter. “I told our team we took their best shot now it is our turn,” SHS Coach Rick Saldana said. “I love the resilience of my team … (we were) poised and never rattled.” Maddux Locke scored 16 points, Hope Overweg scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Brenn Crittenden added nine points and six rebounds, and Rylee Siefert finished with six points and 10 rebounds for Springport.

Individual District Wrestling

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the regional round next Saturday at various locations. 

Division 1 at Jackson: Curtis Winters of Jackson High School won the district title at 285 pounds and teammate Reece Deshazor was third in the same weight class advancing to the regional tournament next week. Caden Bayer and Zander Resor finished third and fourth respectively at 138 pounds to punch their tickets to the regional round. Jackson wrestlers advance to the Holt regional tournament next Saturday. 

Division 2 at Stevensville Lakeshore: Jeffrey Miller of Northwest High School won the district title at 144 leading a bevy of Mounties to the regional tournament next Saturday at Mason. Other qualifiers included: Alex Trudell of Western who was third at 190 pounds; Thomas Fall of Northwest placed second at 113 pounds; Evan Beuerle of Northwest finished third at 132 pounds; Blaine Anspaugh of Northwest was second at 138 pounds; Owen St. Andre of Western finished fourth at 144 pounds; Jack Edwards of Northwest placed third at 150; and Adam Carlson of Western finished fourth at 165 pounds. District qualifiers advance to the regional tournament next Saturday at Mason. 

Division 3 at Williamston: Logan Hartman of Napoleon High School earned a district title at the Williamston Division 3 tournament Saturday. He will be joined by a number of teammates at the individual regional tournament next Saturday at Constantine High School. Earning trips to the regional individual tournament were: Brady Warner of Napoleon finished second and Jack Reid of Grass Lake placed fourth at 190 pounds; Dallas Smith of Napoleon placed third at 215 pounds; Dylan Boone of Columbia Central finished second at 285 pounds; Christian Millican of CCHS finished fourth at 113 pounds; Carter Mikolajczyk of Michigan Center placed third at 126 pounds; Jordan Cromwell of Columbia Central was fourth at 132 pounds; Carson Warner of Napoleon was runner-up at 157 pounds;  Andrew Beadenkopf was also second for Michigan Center at 165 pounds; teammates Mason Roth and Zack Bamm were second and third respectively at 175 pounds and Chase Short of Michigan Center finished fourth in the same weight class. 

Division 4 at Dansville: Three wrestlers earned district title for Jackson area teams during the Division 4 individual district tournament at Dansville High School. Hanover-Horton brother David (126) and A.J. (132) Fielder earned district title in their respective weight classes. East Jackson wrestler Colton Raffensburger earned a title at 165 pounds. The top four in each weight class travel to Hudson High School next Saturday for the regional individual tournament. Other qualifiers included: Hayden Rhinehart of Lumen Christi was fourth at 190 pounds; teammate Maverick Stergakos finished third at 215; Anthony Morin Castro placed third for the Titans at 106 pounds; Roberto Mireles of East Jackson was fourth at 113 pounds; Nolan Curtis of LCCHS finished fourth at 126 pounds; Dylan Byrd of East Jackson finished fourth at 138 pounds; Hanover-Horton wrestler Gavin Berkeypile was runner-up at 144 pounds; Clayton Clark of East Jackson was also runner-up at 157 pounds; and James Hart of Lumen Christi placed fourth at 165 pounds. 

Division 4 at Bronson: Nate Fritz (120) of Concord and Caleb Wendt (157) of Springport earned district titles at the Bronson Division 4 district tournament Saturday. Concord and Springport had a number of regional qualifiers including: Alex Winters of Concord was second at 215 pounds; Eli Worth of Springport placed fourth at 285 pounds; Springport wrestler Jacob Potter finished fourth at 106 pounds; Owen Thomas of Springport was second at 120 pounds; Trenton Hamilton of Springport finished third at 126; Collin Thompson of Concord was runner-up at 138 pounds; Rylinn Hale finished third at 144 pounds for Springport; Kaden Sizemore of Springport placed fourth at 150 pounds; and Brendan Barrett of Springport finished third at 175 pounds. Regional qualifiers travel to Mendon next Saturday for the regional individual tournament in Division 4. 

Competitive Cheer

Tri-County Championships at Hudson: Michigan Center won the Jackson County Division with a score of 739. Hanover-Horton was second (696), Columbia Central was third (644), Northwest placed fourth (611), Grass Lake finished fifth (585), and Napoleon claimed sixth place (542). 

Hockey

Lumen Christi 5, Mattawan 4 

Jackson United 2, Dexter 1: Jackson United earned a bounce back win at Dexter Saturday night. Peyton Paquin and Aiden Chappell scored second period goals for Jackson United in the win. 

Gymnastics

JAG at Coldwater Invitational: Jackson Area Gymnastics finished third out of 20 teams scoring 137.05. Annabelle Beebe of JAG won the vault (9.05), and teammate London Henderson was second (9.0), Addi Richmond won the floor exercise with a personal best (9.6) and was second on the bars (8.75), and Ally Thrun was third on the floor (9.35). 

College Sports Events

Women’s Basketball

Spring Arbor 84, Taylor 68: Alex Long scored 24 points and Alana Nelson added 20 points for SAU in the home win. Sydney Aunins finished with 14 points off the bench for Spring Arbor (19-5 overall, 10-4 Crossroads League). 

Jackson College 79, Wayne County CC 60: Jackson College improved to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association with the road win. Kaylona Butler finished with a team-high 27 points to lead Jackson College. Michelle McGee finished with 14 points and Zoie Bamm tallied 11 points for JC. The Jets travel to St. Clair County Community College Wednesday for a 5:30 tipoff. 

Men’s Basketball

Spring Arbor 81, Taylor 59: Four players scored in double digits as SAU got back on the winning track. Kevyn Robertson scored 23 points, Travis Grayson finished with 21 points, Gabe Newhof tallied 16 points, and Dante Favor added 10 points for SAU (12-12 overall, 5-9 CL). 

Wayne County CC 71, Jackson College 64: Jackson College fell to 10-13 overall for the season with the road loss. The Jets are 2-7 in the MCCAA. Jackson College will travel to St. Clair County Community College Wednesday for a 7:30 start. 

Competitive Cheer

Wildcat Invite: Spring Arbor finished eighth out of 11 team during the two-day invitational. 

Baseball

Spring Arbor at Saint Xavier: Both scheduled games were canceled on Saturday.

Tennis

Bowling

Jackson College at MCCAA Tournament: The Jets finished second in the women’s event and third in the men’s at Merri-Bowl Lanes in Livonia Friday. “Although the outcome was not what we wanted, these athletes never quit,” JC Coach Steve Sears said. “Our goal is always to win, but very proud of how each and every player responded.” Trey Richmond and Parker Horvath finished third in the doubles, Logan Schneider finished third and Jackson Kremer sixth in singles, and Richmond and Charlie Teller finished in the top eight earning all-conference honors. On the women’s side, Olivia Palmer and Abby Gutowski finished second in doubles, Haley Wallace, Kaelin Pond, and Gutowski placed in the top nine in singles, and Gutowski earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top eight for the day. Jackson College will bowl in the regionals next Friday in Lansing.
