Springport Falls in Battle for Big Eight Conference Basketball Title

If someone had told Springport High School girls’ basketball Coach Rick Saldana that the Spartans would be playing its last Big Eight Conference game of the season for a title, he probably would have believed it.

But he may have been the only one – outside of his team.

Springport graduated half of its team from 2022 and only had two starters returning to the 2022-2023 squad.

But the Spartans found ways to win and could have tied Bronson for the conference title with a home win on Monday.

But the Vikings made a couple of big runs pulling out a 47-39 win.

Bronson finishes the conference season with a perfect record in the Big Eight.

“They are a long and solid team,” Coach Saldana said. “I thought we would be more patient (shooting) … but that is on me.”

Springport trailed 10-4 after the first eight minutes of action, but tied Bronson at 10-all two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. After taking a brief 15-12 lead, Bronson scored the last seven points of the second quarter for a 19-15 lead.

Springport again tied the game at 19-all in the third quarter, but Bronson went on for a 35-27 lead heading into the final quarter of the game.

Brenna Crittenden scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Vikings.

Rylee Siefert finished with nine points and Hope Overweg dominated the board with 16 rebounds for the Spartans. Springport finishes with two losses in the Big Eight Conference – both to Bronson.

Aubree Calloway scored 17 points to lead Bronson to the victory.
