Wrestling

Big Eight Conference at Reading: Springport High School finished third and Concord sixth at the Big Eight Championship at Reading High School. Top four placers included: Kylee Grimmett of Springport finished second at 113 pounds; Owen Thomas of Springport finished second and Nate Fritz of Concord third at 120 pounds; Trenton Hamilton was third at 126 pounds; Collin Thompson of Concord placed second at 138 pounds; Rylinn Hale of Springport finished second at 144 pounds; Springport wrestler Kaden Sizemore was second at 150 pounds; Patrick Culbreth of Springport was third at 157 pounds; Brendan Barrett of Springport placed third at 175 pounds; Springport’s William Tieman finished third at 190 pounds; Alex Winters of Concord finished fourth at 215 pounds; and Eli Worth of Springport was second and Ben Reiniche of Concord fourth at 285 pounds.  

Toledo Invitational: McKenna Worthing finished fifth at 120 pounds for East Jackson; teammate Kayla Winget was second at 125 pounds; Drew Swihart of Hanover-Horton won the title at 130 pounds; and Aliyah Warner of east Jackson finished sixth at 135 pounds.  

SEC at Adrian: Jackson High School finished ninth out of 14 teams at Adrian High School.  Zander Resor finished third at 138 pounds; Antonio Williams finished fourth at 150 pounds; and Shae Haehnle placed third at 165 pounds for the Vikings. 

Lumen Christi at Catholic League final: The Titans finished 11th out of 15 teams at Divine Child. Hayden Rhinehart finished fourth at 190 pounds and Maverick Stergakos placed third at 215 pounds for the Titans. 

I-8 Finals at Marshall: Northwest High School won the Interstate-8 Conference meet  with 193.5 points edging Hastings (174) and Western (149.5). The Mounties won the duel season and finals meet earning the championship. Top four finishers in each weight class included: Franklin Banister was third at 106 pounds; Thomas Fall of Northwest placed second at 113 pounds; Kayden Beach won the title and Kaden Engelter of Western was third at 120 pounds; Elijah Crist of Western finished second and Carter Cole of Northwest was third at 126 pounds; Evan Beuerle of Northwest on the title at 132 pounds and Ethan St. Andre of Western was third in the same weight class; Blaine Anspaugh of Northwest was second and Quinn Ferris of Western finished fourth at 138 pounds; Jeff Miller on the title at 144 pounds and Sukhman Singh of Western was fourth at the same weight class; Ashton Dack of Northwest won the title at 150 pounds and Owen St. Andre of Western placed third in that weight class; Titan Parker of Western was second and Jack Edwards of Northwest was third at 157 pounds; Juan Asta of Northwest was third and Adam Carlson of Western finished fourth at 165 pounds; Josh Corts of Western finished second at 175 pounds; Alex Trudell of Western won the title at 190 pounds and Kaiden Goodman finished third in the same weight class; Aidan Duncan was third and Aidyn Williams of Northwest placed fourth at 215 pounds; and Ron London finished fourth at 285 pounds. 

Competitive Cheer

Western Cheer Invitational: Columbia Central High School finished second (608), Western was third (573), Napoleon placed fourth (568), Lumen Christi finished fifth (561), and Grass Lake was sixth (556) at Western High School. 

Jonesville Invitational: Hanover-Horton finished third (675) and Springport High School finished seventh (540) at Jonesville Saturday. 

Gymnastics

Haslett Invitational: Western High School finished fifth with a score of 129.95. Sophie Robinson finished fifth on the beam (8.8), Hannah Whiting was third on the bars (8.3) and 10th on the all-around (33.85) for the Panthers. 

Hockey

Eastside 4, Jackson United 3: Jackson United fell on the road in overtime Saturday night. Jackson United took a 3-1 lead in the second period but could not hold on. Nick Baumgardner and Maddox Grimes scored in the first period for JU. Aiden Chappell of JU scored four minutes into the second period for a 3-1 lead. Eastside scored two goals to tie the game and earned the win at the 6:19 mark of the overtime period. Jackson United is now 6-12 overall having scored 49 goals and giving up 67 scores.

College Athletic Events

Women’s Basketball

Jackson College 75, Macomb Community College 52: Michelle McGee scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Kaylona Butler tallied 20 points and earned three steals to lead Jackson. The Jets are now 17-3 overall, 5-1 in MCCAA. Jackson will host Oakland Community College Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.  

Spring Arbor 66, Grace College 55: Alize Tripp scored 20 points and dished three assists, Emma Smieska added 12 points, and Alex Long finished with 11 points for SAU. The Cougars are now 18-4 overall, 9-3 in the Crossroads League. 

Men’s Basketball

Macomb Community College 117, Jackson College 68: The Jets hung tough on the road in the first half trailing 53-41. MCC shot nearly 50 percent from 3-point range and scored 64 points in the second half. Jackson College was led by Antonio King with 28 points, Xavier Ford-Belton scored 14 points, and Jo Coleman tallied 11 points for Jackson College. The Jets are 9-12 overall, 1-6 in the MCCAA. Jackson will host Oakland Community College Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. 

Grace College 84, Spring Arbor 67: No. 1 ranked Grace College improved to 22-0 on the season with the victory at Spring Arbor. Gabe Newhof scored 25 points and Travis Grayson added 16 points for SAU (11-11 overall, 4-8 CL). 

Bowling

Spring Arbor Scotty Invitational at JAX 60: Emily Pepper of SAU finished first with 812 for four games and teammate Montana Hernandez was second with 762 in the women’s event. SAU won the women’s team competition by more than 600 pins. The men’s team won their competition by more than 350 pins at home Saturday. Cody Hall finished fourth individually with a 198 average for SAU.

Track and field

Spring Arbor at IWU Classic: Spring Arbor men finished second in the 3,200-meter relay in 7:53 with a team of Ben Schefka, Camden Khon, Ryan Bowman, and Isaiah Romeyn. Kylie Brown finished third in the 400-meter dash for SAU in 59.42 seconds and second in the 200-meter dash in 26.15 seconds in the women’s event.
