Bob Wright Memorial Baseball Invitational

Championship

Lumen Christi 16, Western 1: Players on the Lumen Christi Catholic School bench were asking why Brody Dalton wanted to play football in college. He is a good baseball player. Dalton hit a home run and knocked in four runs in the Bob Wright Memorial Baseball Invitational championship game at Jackson High School on Saturday. The Titans exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to pull out the win in the championship game. Garrett Swan hit a grand slam home run in the inning for Lumen Christi (12-5). Owen Garcia earned the pitching win for Lumen Christi as he pitched four innings and struck out two batters. Michael Herrington pitched four innings for Western (13-5) and struck out two batters.

Opening rounds

Western 8, Northwest 3: The Panthers scored two runs in the first inning and four more in the sixth to break open a close game in the opening round of the Bob Wright Memorial Baseball Invitational. Cal and Cole Sharp each had a pair of RBIs for Western in the rivalry win. Ryan Nichols picked up the pitching win for Western. Koby Castle had two hits for the Mounties. Western advanced to the invitational final against Lumen Christi, while Northwest faced Jackson in the consolation final. 

Lumen Christi 7, Jackson 5: Brody Dalton was the hitting and pitching star for the Titans. He pitched 6 2/3 innings in relief and hit a home run for Lumen Christi. Jackson had three runs across the plate in the first inning without an out. Dalton slowed to Vikings on the mound with 11 strikeouts and the Titans’ bats came alive late in the game. Nate Hobbs pitched a strong game for the Vikings, leaving late in the contest with eight strikeouts. With the game tied at 4-all in the top of the seventh inning, the Titans scored on a double by Cole Simpson, a bounce out, an RBI single by Cole Clifford, and a single by Dalton. 

Consolation final

Northwest 14, Jackson 2: Five runs in the sixth inning propelled the Mounties to the win. Noah Miller and Jaden Manser knocked in a pair of runs for Northwest (14-11). Sam Arvy had a pair of hits in the game for Jackson (1-14-1) 

Softball

Grass Lake 14, Brighton 0: Rylee Fitzpatrick, Olivia Turner, and Emily Guthrie all collected three hits for the Warriors in the win. Laney Brown earned the shutout for Grass Lake (26-1).

Grass Lake 8, Brighton 4: The Warriors rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the win. Olivia Turner had three RBIs and Makayla Miller added two RBIs for Grass Lake. Katelyn Postuma earned the pitching win for GLHS. 

Boys’ track and field 

Concord Invitational: Concord High School won its own invitational on Saturday with 144 points. Reading and Lake Odessa tied for second with 106 and Jackson Prep & Early College was seventh with nine points. Concord won three of the four relay events. The Yellow Jackets also took three of the five field events as Christian Kirkland won the shot put (43-10), Mekhi Wingfield won the high jump (6-0), and Chuckie King took first in the long jump (20-2). 

Lumen Christi 93, Pennfield 62: Matt Hoop of Lumen Christi Catholic High School won the 800-meter run (2:15) and the 1,600-meter run (4:57). Basil Hampton won the 100-meter dash (12:05) and the long jump (17-7). 

Hillsdale Invitational: Grass Lake won the boys’ meet with 144 points to edge Jonesville (141). Northwest finished seventh with 27 points. Brennen Bargesser won the 100-meter dash (11.18), the 200-meter dash (22.46), and the 400-meter dash (49.62). Jack Easterday won the 110-meter hurdles (16.53), the 300-meter hurdles (42.29), and the high jump (6-0). Evan Stucky won the discus (130-7), and Grass Lake won the 400-meter relay (45.03) with Trenton Holden, Andrew Stockton, Josh Sherwood, and Bargesser. 

Girls’ track and field 

Concord Invitational: Concord finished sixth with 57 points and JPEC was seventh scoring 11 points. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart won the event with 141 points. Karlee Gamet won the discus for Concord with a throw of 89-3.  

Pennfield 74, Lumen Christi 60: Renae Kutcha won the 100-meter dash (13.08), the 200-meter dash (27.25), and the 400-meter (59.39) for the Titans. Madison Osterberg won the 800-meter run (2:28) and the 1,600-meter run (5:27). 

Hillsdale Invitational: Grass Lake finished sixth and Northwest seventh at the Jack Beilfuss Invitational at Hillsdale. Julia Warneck won the 100-meter dash (13.83) and was second in the long jump (14-9.25) for Northwest in the girls’ meet. Kailee Sandoval took first in the 800-meter run (2:19) to set a new school record for the Warriors.

PGA Tour

Jackson native Brian Stuard moved up several spots on Saturday at the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic at McKinney, Texas. Stuard shot a 5-under-par 67 moving to 11-under-par for the tournament. He scored five birdies and no bogeys at the TPC Craig Ranch Course. Stuard moved up 19 spots on Saturday and is currently tied for 34th heading into the final round on Sunday.
