Girls District Basketball Finals

Grass Lake 62, East Jackson 33: Kate Starkey scored 29 points leading the Warriors to the district title. Grass Lake will face Pewamo-Westphalia or Ovid-Elsie in the regional semifinal Tuesday at Dansville High School, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Springport 45, Stockbridge 41: The Spartans had a big second quarter with 20 points after a slow start. Maddux Overweg sored 13 points and dished seven assists and Chloey Speer and Brenna Crittenden each scored 10 points for SHS. The Spartans will play the winner of Laingsburg/Dansville in the regional semifinal Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m. at Dansville High School.

Boys Bowling Team State Finals

Division 3 at JAX 60: Napoleon High School qualified fourth by rolling 3,251 pins for eight Baker games and two individual games. The Pirates lost to Ogema Heights in the opening round 1,247 – 1,193 at JAX 60 in Jackson.

Division 4 at M-66 Bowl: Grass Lake High School qualified second but ran the table to win another state title in bowling at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. The Warriors finished second in the 10-game qualifying with 3,204. Grass Lake defeated Plymouth Christian, Britton-Deerfield, and New Lothrop to claim the title. Grass Lake defeated New Lothrop 1,253 – 1,123 in the final. Grass Lake jumped out to be big lead with Baker games of 195 and 187. In the individual games, Brice Sandoval rolled a 198 game and Cayden DeWitt rolled a 193 to lead Grass Lake. The Warriors have won three state titles in the last four season and finished runners-up in the 2022 event. Lumen Christi finished 10th with a score of 2,917 pins. 

Girls Bowling Team State Finals

Division 3 at JAX 60: Napoleon High School was the No.1 seed following qualifying. The Pirates finished with a total of 3,071 pins in the 10 qualifying games. Napoleon defeated Armada in the opening round by bowling a 722 for five individual games. A bad Baker game against Flint Powers cost the Pirates a chance to advance to the finals. Napoleon won the first Baker game by a few pins but were beaten by 72 pins in the second team game. The Pirates came back to win the individual games, 852-843, but lost on total pins for the three games, 1,176 – 1,115. Natasha Eastridge started the individual game for Napoleon with six consecutive strikes enroute to a 205 game. Sydney Gallagher finished with a 180 game for the Pirates. Napoleon finished third at the Division 3 tournament at JAX 60 in Jackson. 

Division 4 at M-66 Bowl: Hanover-Horton High School qualified for the stepladder portion of the tournament by finishing seventh. The Comets finished the 10-game qualifying with 2,653 at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. Hanover-Horton lost 1,043 – 967 to conference foes Jonesville in the opening round. 

Wrestling

Four Jackson County wrestlers will battle for state individual championships on Saturday. Danni Swihart, Adam Haselius, Zach Jacobs, and Wesley Edie are in the championship matches of their respective weight classes. Here are results from all of the Jackson area wrestlers on Friday. 

Girls

Saige Patterson, Springport, 110 pounds, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention. 

Emily Guthrie, Grass Like, 120, went 2-1 on the day and will earn all-state honors on Saturday. 

Kayla Winget, East Jackson, 125, went 1-2 on the day bowing out of the tournament. 

Danni Swihart, Hanover-Horton, 140, went 3-0 on the day and will wrestle for her second consecutive MHSAA state individual championship on Saturday. 

Sienna Tovar, Jackson, 140, won two matches, but lost one, but will earn a top eight all-state medal on Saturday. 

Fie Henriksen, East Jackson, 170, was a state qualifier but not listed in the bracket at 170 pounds. 

Bella Huston, Columbia Central, 190, went 2-1 on the day and will earn all-state honors for a second consecutive season. 

Haylee Ryan, Northwest, 235, went 2-1 on the day and will earn all-state honors on Saturday. 

Boys

Division 2

Cameron Beach, Northwest, 113 pounds, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention.

Trevor Morehouse, Jackson, 113 pounds, went 2-1 on the day and will finish in the top eight with a medal on Saturday. 

Jeff Miller, Northwest, 126, went 2-1 on the day and will earn a top eight medal on Saturday. 

Caden Bayer, Jackson, 132, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Gage Race, Northwest, 138, went 2-1 on the day and will earn a top eight medal on Saturday.

Gavin Beach, Northwest, 150, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Zach Jacobs, Northwest, 157, won three matches and will be wrestling for a state championship on Saturday. 

Braden Gariety, Northwest, 165, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention. 

Adam Haselius, Northwest, 215, won all three of his matches and will be wrestling for a second state individual championship on Saturday. 

Kyle Bonner, Jackson, 285, went 2-1 on the day and will earn an all-state medal on Saturday. 

Division 3

Aiden Bocanegra, Napoleon, 113, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Brenden Yob, Napoleon, 120, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention. 

Mason Roth, Napoleon, 157, went 2-1 on the day and will earn an all-state medal on Saturday. 

Bart Laretz, Napoleon, 175, went 2-1 on the day and will earn an all-state medal on Saturday. 

Division 4

Wesley Edie, Grass Lake, 120, went 3-0 on the day and will wrestle for a state individual title on Saturday.  

A.J. Fielder, Hanover-Horton, 120, went 2-1 on the day and will earn all-state honors on Saturday with a medal. 

David Fielder, Hanover-Horton, 126, went 2-1 on the day and will earn all-state honors on Saturday with a medal. 

Tobin Okoniewski, Lumen Christi, 132, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Collin Thompson, Concord, 138, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Reid Garcia, Lumen Christi, 144, went 2-1 on the day and will earn an all-state medal on Saturday. 

Josh Frailey, Hanover-Horton, 150, went 2-1 on the day and will earn an all-state medal on Saturday. 

Clayton Clark, East Jackson, 157, went 0-2 on the day and was eliminated from the tournament. 

Colton Raffensburger, East Jackson, 165, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention. 

Jack Reid, Grass Lake, 190, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention. 

Gaven Teller, Hanover-Horton, 190, went 1-2 on the day and was eliminated from medal contention.
