Regional finals, Nov. 12 and 13
Division 3
St. Joseph 49, Western 13: The Panther players must have felt like United States Postal Service workers – with snow, rain, sleet, and high winds during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 regional final. Wind gusts up to 40 mph made for an interesting game as the team with the wind had a great chance of scoring. St. Joseph took advantage of that scoring three times in the first quarter. Western scored in the second quarter – with the wind – on an 87-yard drive culminating in a 1-yard run by quarterback Nolan Wheeler for a score. The Panthers trailed 28-7 at halftime. Wheeler scored again in the second half on a 7-yard run. Western finished with less than 200 yards of offense including 116 through the air. St. Joseph ran for more than 300 yards on the ground. The Bears will face the winner of DeWitt and Cedar Springs in the D-3 state semifinal next week.
Division 6
Michigan Center 27, Clinton 13: Kaydin Hiland ran for a score and threw for two more as the Cardinals won the school’s first regional football championship at Clinton on Friday. Carter McBride and Daylen Hinkle caught touchdown passes from Hiland. Kyran Lane had a big 80-yard kickoff return giving the Cardinals the lead for good. Michigan Center (11-1) will face either Warren Michigan Collegiate or Ecorse in the Division 6 state semifinals next week at a neutral site.
Division 7
Detroit Loyola (6-4) at Lumen Christi (10-1) Saturday, 1 p.m.
