Football

Concord 48,  Suttons Bay 0: The Yellow Jackets finally put it together defensively with a shutout at Mt. Pleasant High School Saturday night. Gavin Riske connected on four touchdown passes and Collin Thompson ran for two scores for Concord. Mekhi Wingfield caught touchdown passes of 30, 12, and 27 yards and Jordan Medellin caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Riske. He finished with 207 passing yards on 20-for-29 passing and ran for another 84 yards. Wingfield finished with nine receptions for 126 yards. T.J. Allen finished with 10 tackles for Concord (3-2). The Yellow Jackets will travel to Gobles for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday. Concord finishes the season with three home contest. The Suttons Bay game was played at a neutral site as each teams were approximately 120 miles from Mt. Pleasant. 

Football Game Changes

Addison High School will host Homer next Thursday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. It is the Panthers’ homecoming game. The contest was originally scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. 

Columbia Central will move its home game against Jonesville from Friday to Saturday at 7 p.m. 

Both contests were changed due to the lack of referees. 

Volleyball

Concord at Morenci Invitational: Concord went 2-2 on the day with wins over Morenci and Onsted. Iyla Weeks finished with 56 kills and 18 digs for Concord. Bradie Lehman finished with 69 assists, Emma Burbo recorded five aces, and Marissa Mandrelle finished with 19 digs for the Yellow Jackets. 

Cross Country

Jackson Invitational at Sharp Park

D1 girls: Grace Brown finished 109th for Jackson with a time of 20:57. 

D1 boys:  Jackson High School finished 28th with 843 points. Bryson White finished 158th for the Vikings in 17:57 and Hollis Mick placed 193rd with a time of 18:35. 

D2 girls: Western High School finished second with 66 points and Napoleon placed sixth scoring 146. Chloe Khon of Northwest was fifth individually (20:20), Raquel Curry of Western finished eighth (21:43), teammate Marina Walz finished 11th (21:48), Natalie Kuhl of WHS was 13th (22:00), teammate Isabella Stoetzel ran 22:22 finishing 18th, and Lauren McLain of Napoleon finished right behind her (22:24). 

D2 boys: Western High School finished second (57), Napoleon was fourth (133), and Northwest placed sixth (141) in the Division 2 race. Western runners Cooper Singleton (16:43) and Edison Lopeman (16:49) were fourth and fifth respectively, Kyler Pequet of Napoleon finished 13th (17:54), and Hudson Cooper of Northwest was 18th (18:16). 

D 3/4 girls: Lumen Christi won the event with 45 points, Hanover-Horton was seventh scoring 181, and Grass Lake was right behind the Comets with 203 points. Madison Osterberg of Lumen Christi won the event in 18:03, teammate Samantha Schroeder finished fourth in 19:14, Macy Fazekas of LCCHS placed seventh in 20:07, and Olivia Perrine of Hanover-Horton placed eighth in 20:13. 

D 3/4 boys:  Hanover-Horton finished second with 85 points, Lumen Christi was third scoring 108, East Jackson placed seventh scoring 231, Columbia Central was 11th with 260, and Grass Lake finished behind the Golden Eagles with 294 points. Placing in the top 10 were Isaiah Dinverno of Lumen Christi who won the event (15:56), Michael Allen of East Jackson (16:45), Landen Boulis of Hanover-Horton (16:56), and teammate Evan Shepherd was 10th (16:59). 

Boys Soccer

Northwest 6, Charlotte 0: Teagen Hudgins scored two goals in a road win Saturday.

Jackson 3, Lumen Christi 1: Emilio Arze-Novak earned the win in goal for the Vikings in a home victory Saturday. 

DeWitt 5, Western 1: Roarke Watterson scored the Panthers’ only goal of the night on a penalty kick. 

Boys Tennis

Lumen Christi at Allegan Invitational: Luke Tropea, T.J. O’Neil, and Joe Mills won matches for the Titans at Nos. 2-4 respectively. No final scores were posted on TennisReporting.com. 

Girls Swimming

Jackson 114, Pinckney 34: The Vikings defeated Pinckney at home earlier in the week. Isabelle Ortiz and Haily Hawkins each won three events for the Vikings. 

College Athletic Events

Women’s Bowling

Spring Arbor at Dirty Bird Classic at Concordia: The Cougars won the tournament with a score of 6,419 pins for a combination of individual and Baker games. Mikayla Ponce finished with a 247 game and Kaylee Hall rolled a 222 for Spring Arbor. 

Men’s Bowling

Spring Arbor at Dirty Bird Classic at Concordia: The Cougars finished third in the first annual tournament at Concordia University. Spring Arbor finished with a total of 6,922 pins for a combination of Baker and individual games. Caleb Tate and Carson Kohler both rolled 235 games for Spring Arbor. 

Women’s Soccer

Jackson 2, Owens Community College 0: Allie Tate and Franny Parks scored goals for the Jets. JC goalie Katelyn Gasper earned the win in net with two saves. Jackson is now 7-4-1 overall, 5-3-1 in MCCAA play. The Jets will host Lake Michigan College Wednesday at 2 p.m. 

Spring Arbor 4, Bethel 1: The Cougars opened league play with a victory. Kaylee Beekel, Lauren Marshall, Regan Ramirez, and Jocelyn Hendricks all scored for SAU. Blair Currie stopped six shots in goal for her first win in net this season for SAU (8-0 overall). 

Men’s Soccer

Bethel 2, Spring Arbor 0: Matt LeBlanc earned four saves in net for the Cougars. 

Volleyball

Spring Arbor 3, Grace 1: Keely Hinzman finished with 15 kills with a kill percentage of .433. Hayden Fortress and Camy Wedge combined for 37 assists and Frances Churchwell tallied 19 digs for Spring Arbor (10-8 overall, 4-3 conference). 

MCCAA: Jackson College freshman libero Alivia Smith is the MCCAA Eastern Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ended Sept. 17. In two matches, Smith averaged 4.14 digs or 29 total over seven sets and also recorded four assists. She is a 2023 graduate from Vandercook Lake High School.
