Panthers earn hard-fought rivalry soccer win over NW

Despite being outshot 10-0 in the first half of a rivalry game, Northwest High School was still only one goal away from tying the game for most of the second half against Western. But Sydney Siders put a cure to that with a free kick goal with 13:05 remaining in the game for the Panthers. The goal gave Western a 2-0 win over the Mounties in girls’ soccer least night. The Panthers are now 3-2 overall for the season, 1-0 in the Interstate-8 Conference, while the Mounties are 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the conference. “They did a nice job of defending us … we struggled to solve it (Northwest’s defense),” WHS Coach Kevin Bristol said. “They really packed it in.” The Panthers outshot the Mounties 10-0 in the first half, but NWHS goalie Mallory Anspaugh kept them in the game. Madi Barnes finally got a shot past Anspaugh late in the first half for a 1-0 halftime lead. Western finished with 15 shots on goal while Northwest only registered three. Kendall Robertson recorded the shutout in goal for Western.
