(September 9, 2020 6:13 PM) Firefighters from the City of Jackson and several area fire departments responded to a large structure fire this afternoon in the block surrounded by Martin L. King Jr. Drive, Homewild Avenue and Oak Street in Downtown Jackson. There are 4 or 5 buildings in the block, sharing common walls. Thick smoke was seen pouring out of the top of the buildings as ladder trucks from Jackson, Blackman, Summit and Spring Arbor sprayed water on the fire.
Elmer Hitt, Director of Police and Fire Services for the City of Jackson said no one was in the building at the time and firefighters conducted sweeps of the interior. No injuries have been reported.
It is unknown what the buildings contain, but one firefighter said they believed there may be hazardous materials stored in one part of the structure. A portion of the complex was home to USA Car Care and signs on the buildings advertised warehouse space for rent.
As of 6 PM, flames and smoke are visible and departments remain on scene.
Further details as they become available.
