(August 18, 2021) The Jackson Golf Hall of Fame Committee has announced that former Jackson Citizen Patriot golf reporter Gary Kalahar is this year’s inductee into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame. Kalahar will become the Hall of Fame’s 68th member in ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Sharp Park Golf Course. The public is invited to the induction ceremony.

Kalahar was a sports writer at the Citizen Patriot for 17 years, including 16 years as the newspaper’s golf reporter (1996-2011). In addition to covering local golf tournaments,  he wrote a golf column along with a variety of feature stories for the Citizen Patriot’s weekly golf page during the season. In 1997, he initiated the Golfer of the Year Honor Roll, which still awards points based on tournament finishes and honors the top men’s and women’s players in Jackson each year.

Kalahar has also served the game as a member of the Jackson Golf Committee and the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame Committee. He joined the Jackson Golf Committee in 2010 and since then has served as the secretary/treasurer and historian, helping to administer local tournaments and continuing to  compile past results and records for easy reference on the committee’s website.

He has been a member of the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame Committee since 2008 and served as the committee chairman from 2011-2020. He took over as chairman from Vic Cuiss, who had served in the role since the Hall of Fame’s inception in 1982.”I am so pleased with the selection of Gary Kalahar for the honor,” Hall of Fame Committee chairman Elaine Crosby said. “He has served our Jackson golf community for many, many years. As a golf journalist, Gary was the utmost professional. All of us on the committee are excited to welcome Gary into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame.”
