(August 16, 2023 8:00 AM ET) After finishing 2-7 two years ago (first losing record in 20 years), the Warriors bounced back to 5-5 and a playoff appearance last season, and they look to surprise even more people this year.
The primary goal and focus for Grass Lake heading into the 2023 campaign is teach and learn, many roles to be filled this year.
Head Coach Randy Cole is entering his 24th season at the helm, and 42nd total within the program. Cole has been one of the most successful coaches in the region since his time here, leading Grass Lake to winning records 22 of 24 seasons.
“Last year we won some big games but lost in the opening round. We can do better this year,” said the coach.
“We want to be the team to restore the tradition of winning Grass Lake football,” said star quarterback Brayden Lape.
The Warriors return just four starters on both offense and defense and will rely heavily on this junior class.
Some returning starters include Brayden Lape (QB), Jack Reid (TE/LB), Robert Anderson (WR/CB), Liam Metheringham (RB/LB), Bryant Cook (WR/S), and linemen Stack Suliman/Quint Leland.
Newcomers expected to make an impact include Junior Jacob Collins (WR/LB), and Junior Zach Myer (OL/DL).
The coaching staff also returns Anthony Cole for his sixth season as offensive coordinator, and Chris Reul for his ninth season as defensive coordinator.
Grass Lake kicks off the season by hosting Royal Oak Shrine, who they beat 35-6 last year. They will also play Jonesville and Leslie, two of the four new Cascades teams.
