(May 8, 2020 12:11 PM) Organizers of the Gus Macker Jackson Basketball Tournament have announced the postponement of this year’s event to July 24-25 of 2021. There will not be a tournament this summer.

In a statement, the Jackson Gus Macker committee said, “This has not been an easy decision and we are saddened by the impact that COVID-19 has had on our world and specifically the Jackson Community.  While it would be great to host a celebration of this kind in a perfect world, none of the Gus Macker #JacksonMI team and partners felt comfortable hosting an event of this magnitude, in terms of people density, contact on the courts, etc., and creating a forum that could potentially generate more harm than good as The Slope hits a downward trajectory this summer.”

Kyle Liechty, chairman of the Jackson event said, “While we are not able to have our tournament, we would like to put our efforts towards a virtual activity/event that we can all be a part of to support a great cause. In the upcoming weeks, we will release information on how you can give back to our great community. Make sure to check and follow our social media accounts for more information, as well as from our friends in the basketball community sharing updates regarding the “Kerry Lehman Legacy Officials Scholarship” and support opportunities:

Liechty added, “We ask that you continue to support the non-profit organizations hosting signature fundraising activities throughout the summer and fall, as well as our area small businesses, to keep our community strong and vibrant for years to come.

We’d like to thank our partners, the Jackson Community and all other supporters of our event that were supposed to be a part of a great weekend downtown. We want to put the safety of our community before all else and don’t want to put anyone in potential harm. Gus Macker hopes that we  can all come together for an even better celebration of Jackson in July 2021.”
