(2-28-2024, 7:05PM): DeVonta Habern started the game as the star for the Napoleon Pirates, as they took on Springport in the first game of the District Semifinals at East Jackson High School on Wednesday night.
Six different Pirates scored in the opening quarter as they had a 12-4 lead just two minutes into it. Habern scored 13 in the first along with Carson Godfrey adding four as they took a 26-12 lead after one. Springport opened the game with four points from Eli Dyer and three from Tucker Wigginton.
Napoleon tied the largest lead of the game to open the second quarter, leading by as much as 14 at one point. Braydon Hawes scored five for the Spartans late in the quarter to cut the deficit to single digits.
The Pirates led 39-27 going into the locker room. Wigginton scored seven for Springport in the first half along with Jake Kregel and Hawes each adding six. DeVonta Habern scored 20 through two and Carson Godfrey scored six.
It was on the lower side of the scoring in the third quarter, with Napoleon only outscoring Springport 11-10. Tyler Nall came off the bench for Napoleon and scored seven third-quarter points as they lead 50-37 after three.
The Pirates were able to pull away in the final quarter, taking the largest lead of the game by 24 and finish with a 77-51 victory. DeVonta Habern led Napoleon with 30 points, Tyler Nall added 15 and Carsen Godfrey tallied eight. Springport was led by Braydon Hawes with 14 points and Tucker Wiggington added 13.
Springport finishes 15-8, having it’s best season in almost 10 years and a 2nd place Big 8 Conference finish. Napoleon will face the winner of Michigan Center/Lumen Christi in the District Final on Friday night at EJHS.
