Grass Lake High School wrestler Wesley Edie wrote in his notebook every day, “2023, Division 4 state champ at 120 pounds.”

On Saturday it came true.

Edie earned a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Daven Lockwood of New Lothrop in the 120-pound final earning the state title.

He was one of two Jackson County wrestlers who earned state titles. Northwest wrestler Adam Haselius won a second state title with a 5-1 win at 215 pounds in Division 2. He finishes the season with a perfect 50-0 record and 95 consecutive wins in high school wrestling.

Edie didn’t have the luxury of a full team around him like Haselius, but the senior made the best of it.

“We had a tough 125 pounder on our team, and I wrestled with our 144 pounder,” Edie said. “I also worked with some Napoleon wrestlers.”

Edie earned three wins on Friday advancing to the final on Saturday. He wore a throwback uniform at least 20 years old in the final.

“I was confident going into the match today,” Edie said.

Haselius got up 2-0 in the first period of the finals and never looked back in his win.

“Nobody wins a state championship if they don’t expect it,” Haselius said. “I wrestled at 215 pounds for the good of the team.”

Plus the senior would not need to cut weight to get down to 190. He won the Division 2 state title at 189 pounds a year ago.

The Mounties will be losing nearly a dozen seniors next year, but leave a legacy for other teams to strive toward.

“We set a big the example … a big statement,” Haselius said. “Hard work has been our example.”

Teammate Zach Jacobs also advanced to the finals in Division 2 at 157 pounds. He lost to Cory Thomas of Pontiac 5-1 in the finals, finishing the season with 36 wins.

In the girls’ finals, Danni Swihart of Hanover-Horton lost 5-2 in the 140 pound final. She was attempting to earn a second consecutive state title for the Comets. Swihart finishes the season with 35 wins.
