(January 11, 2025 8:00 AM ET) Jackson Christian High School basketball player Rennie Huff carries a little bit of her family heritage each time she walks onto the court.
So far it is working for the JCHS junior.
Huff is averaging more than 20 points, six rebounds, five steals, and shooting better than 50 percent from the field.
She has helped lead Jackson Christian to a 5-3 record this season.
“We are still young with two freshmen who start,” Huff said of the Royals. “We should be 7-1 as we let a couple of games slip away … we are better than 5-3.”
Huff carries the name of her grandmother, Rennie, onto the court each time she is announced in the starting lineup. She is also the daughter of the JCHS Coach – Patti Huff – a former player for the Royals.
Patti coached the Royals in the past, stopped for a few years, and started back up when the girls’ basketball coach resigned two years ago.
“Sometimes it is hard separating basketball from home,” the young Huff said. “We spend a lot of time strategizing ways to battle our opponents.”
Unlike some athletes, the younger Huff has experience numerous coaches in youth basketball and AAU. Her mother coached her only one time in elementary school.
“I like getting different perspectives on the game from different coaches,” Huff said. “I think it helps me as a player.”
Huff was not the main cog for the Royals when she came up to the varsity level as a freshman. The Royals had numerous experienced seniors on the team that won 17 games.
She had to learn leadership as a sophomore on a very inexperienced team.
“I knew that the pressure was on me to be the leader so I needed to be able to learn leadership in a good way,” Huff said of her sophomore year. “I have gotten better (at being a leader on the team).
“I have learned that it is not all about me … it is the team, growth within the team, and winning.”
The junior has found herself as the center of attention with her basketball stats. She has maintained a low key approach on the court.
“It is easy to talk smack (to opposing player) but I found it easier not to say anything to the other team,” Huff said. “I have learned to always be positive on the court.
“You are going to make mistakes out there … learn to overcome those.”
Huff would like to play for a small Christian college in two years. She has sent out tapes, emailed coaches, and has a Twitter page that highlights her basketball accomplishments.
She is second in her class with a 3.92 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Huff also participates in volleyball and soccer at Jackson Christian.
“Sports teaches you to persevere and roll with the punches,” Huff said. “It also teaches you to work with all types of people.”
