(December 21, 2024 8:00 AM ET) A freshman averaging 28 points per game and being a leader on the varsity team doesn’t happen very often.
But in this case, that is what Kenna Hunt is beginning to do for the Lumen Christi girls basketball program.
She made an impact right from the start, scoring 27 points in the season opener versus Columbia Central. Hunt was below her season average on Wednesday night, scoring 14 points in a 60-28 win over Jackson.
Despite scoring just 14, her teammates’ scoring and Hunt’s defensive efforts make up for it. “Even when the shots aren’t falling, we got to stay positive. In the end, defense wins games. It was a physical game, we knew not all of the shots were going fall so our defense made up for it,” said Hunt after Wednesday night’s win.
Hunt has also been nationally recognized already, racking up five NCAA Division I offers, all from the Mid-American Conference. Offers include Western Michigan, Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, and Kent State.
She has also been on an unofficial visit to Michigan State University earlier this year. The 5 foot, 7 inch tall point guard is currently ranked as the top freshman in the state of Michigan by prepgirlshoops.com.
Her standout play over the summer with the travel team ‘Legends U’ contributed to her being recognized.
Hunt has already become a leader for this Lady Titans team just four games into her high school career.
“It’s been great … I love my teammates,” Hunt said. “They respect me and I respect them. This year has been about family … forget about me, I love you.
“It’s been easy with this group of girls too.”
“She’s a special kid. What makes her special is her work ethic. She’s in the gym 24/7 and kids look up to her as a leader” said Lumen Christi Head Coach and Athletic Director Jesse Brown. “She’s a humble kid, her work in the gym shows for herself.”
Hunt believes the Titans will be okay just playing their own game
“Really our only goal this year is to just play at our best, no matter what the other team is doing,” Hunt said. “As long as we do what we do, it’ll be alright.”
Lumen Christi improved to 3-1 on the season after Wednesday’s victory. Their only blemish is a one-point loss last week to Toledo Central Catholic.
