(January 9, 2023 9:51 AM)  The Michigan Department of Transportation has released this update on the I-94 project:

The contractor has suspended most work activities for the winter months. Traffic is being maintained in its permanent configuration with no ongoing lane or ramp closures. Work on appurtenances, such as right-of way fencing and permanent signs, is anticipated during the winter months as weather conditions allow, but significant work operations will remain suspended until mid-March.

The bulk of the remaining work includes rebuilding the westbound I-94 lanes between the I-94/US-127 interchange and Elm Road. The eastbound I-94 lanes within this section were completed in fall of 2022. Beginning in mid-March, westbound I-94 traffic will be shifted to the eastbound lanes while the contractor rebuilds the westbound lanes. During this time, the permanent westbound I-94 ramp to Elm Road will be built, as well as the remaining portion of Seymour Avenue. This work is anticipated to be completed before Labor Day.

Most of the Elm Road interchange is complete and open to traffic. Remaining work includes completing permanent signs, lighting, pavement markings, and miscellaneous cleanup, as well as building the westbound I-94 exit ramp mentioned above.

The section of I-94 between Airport Road and Cooper Street is substantially completed. The remaining work includes finishing permanent signs, pavement markings, miscellaneous cleanup, and a short section of hot mix asphalt resurfacing along I-94 in both directions at the far west end of the project. All work is anticipated to be completed in the spring.

US-127/M-50/West Avenue traffic is currently in the permanent diverging diamond interchange configuration and most of the work is completed. The remaining work includes removing the old westbound I-94 ramp along with associated earthwork, building a nonmotorized facility along the west side of US-127/M-50/West Avenue, permanent signs, pavement markings, and miscellaneous cleanup.

Also in 2023, US-127/M-50 will be resurfaced in both directions between Springport Road and Parnall Road. This work will be completed via single-lane closures and is expected to be completed over the course of two to three weeks in the spring.

Ramp and local road impacts that are still active:

  • The westbound I-94 exit ramp to Elm Road is maintained via a temporary signalized connection to Seymour Road.
