I-94 Project Construction Resumes Today

(February 27, 2023 9:24 AM) The contractor is scheduled to resume work on the project on Monday, Feb. 27, weather permitting. The bulk of the remaining work includes reconstruction of the westbound lanes of I-94 between the I-94/US-127 interchange and Elm Road.

Initial work will focus preparing to shift westbound I-94 traffic onto the eastbound I-94 roadbed between US-127/West Avenue and the easterly junction of I-94 and US-127. Beginning the week of Monday, Feb. 27, the contractor will begin reconfiguring eastbound I-94 and constructing median crossovers.

It is anticipated that westbound I-94 traffic will be shifted onto the eastbound I-94 roadbed in mid-March. This will necessitate the closure of the westbound I-94 exit ramp to Elm Road. At that time, the contractor will begin the rebuilding of the westbound I-94 roadbed between the east junction of I-94/US-127 and Cooper Street, the new westbound I-94 exit ramp to Elm Road, and the remaining portion of Seymour Avenue.

The rebuilding of the westbound roadbed is scheduled to be completed by late June. At that time, westbound I-94 traffic will be shifted back to the new westbound I-94 roadbed and the contractor will begin completion of the median lanes and barrier wall. We expect the eastbound exit ramp to Elm Road to re-open at this that time as well. Work on the remaining portion of Seymour Avenue is expected to be active from mid-May to late June.

Some work remains to be completed at the diverging diamond interchange, including construction sidewalk along the west side of US-127/M-50/West Avenue, permanent pavement markings, permanent signing, and turf establishment. This work will involve intermittent single lane closures on US-127/M-50/West Avenue. We anticipate that this work will be completed during the spring months of May-June.

Asphalt resurfacing will be completed along US-127/M-50 from Springport Road north to Parnall Road. This work will require single lane closures in each direction and is expected to be completed in May. A short section of asphalt resurfacing remains to be completed along both bounds of I-94 at Airport Road, as well.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2023.

Ramp and local road impacts that are active or anticipated:

• The westbound I-94 exit ramp to Elm Road is maintained via a temporary signalized connection to Seymour Road. This ramp is expected to be closed from mid-March to late June.
• All lanes of I-94 are expected to be shifted to the eastbound I-94 roadbed from US-127/M-50/West Avenue to the east junction of I-94/US-127 from mid-March to late-June.
• Single lane closure will be in place on Seymour Avenue from mid-May to late June. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
• Intermittent single lane closures are anticipated along US-127/M-50/West Avenue from April – June.
