Construction of the Lansing Avenue bridge over I-94. MDOT photo.
(August 16, 2021 11:18 AM) During July and August, crews continued building the new westbound I-94 roadway, nearly finished the new westbound I-94 bridge over West Avenue, completed nearly half of the Lansing Avenue bridge over I-94, completed substantial work on the box culverts under West Avenue/US-127 north of I-94, and began earthwork at the Elm Road/I-94 interchange.
A major milestone is scheduled to occur near Labor Day involving placing traffic on the new westbound I-94 roadway from Lansing Avenue to Airport Road. This change will also allow the reopening of the free-flow westbound I-94 ramp to northbound US-127 and the reopening of the southbound US-127 ramp to westbound I-94. The closure of Shirley Drive is also expected to end near Labor Day. The westbound Cooper Street entrance ramp to I-94 is also scheduled to reopen.
After the I-94 traffic shift occurs, work will begin to rebuild the new eastbound I-94 roadway, the south half of the Lansing Avenue bridge, and the new eastbound I-94 bridge over US-127/West Avenue. When both directions of I-94 are shifted onto the new westbound I-94 roadway, the eastbound I-94 exit ramp to Cooper Street will be closed and detoured to Elm Road.
Traffic impacts that remain active:
- The northbound US-127/West Avenue ramp to westbound I-94 is closed.
- The southbound US-127/West Avenue ramp to westbound I-94 is closed and detoured using Springport Road to Airport Road.
- The southbound US-127/West Avenue ramp to eastbound I-94 is maintained via a temporary ramp using a temporary traffic signal.
- One lane of northbound US-127/West Avenue is closed from Sparks Street to Springport Road.
- The Cooper Street ramp to westbound I-94 is closed and detoured to the Elm Road interchange.
- Lansing Avenue will remain closed from Royal Drive to Shirley Drive until late fall.
- Shirley Drive is closed south of Springport Road and traffic is detoured to Lansing Avenue.
- The eastbound entrance ramp to I-94 at Elm Road is closed and detoured to the Cooper Street interchange.
