(December 1, 2023 9:29 AM ET) The contractor of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) I-94 project in Jackson County is currently completing the rebuilding of westbound I-94 between M-60 and Michigan Avenue (Segment 1) and has completed improvements on eastbound and westbound I-94 between Michigan Avenue and the west county line near M-99 (Segment 2).
Segment 1
After rebuilding the westbound I-94 outside shoulder and outside and inside lanes, the project went into the current stage for rebuilding the westbound inside shoulder. This work is scheduled to be completed mid-December. The contractor will finish building the median barrier wall and installing pavement marking before opening all lanes to traffic.
In this same area, eastbound I-94 will be put back in its seasonal shutdown configuration, with two lanes open. The temporary concrete barrier wall will be relocated to the closed inside shoulder. The outside shoulder and all adjacent ramps and crossroads will remain open for the winter.
The contractor will be installing a 96-inch cross culvert west of Parma Road starting in January. This underground work will not affect the traffic patterns in the project area and will be completed before the next construction season starts.
Segment 2
The contractor completed the scheduled work for the season in this area, which included installing median cable barrier, gravel shoulders, and surface course on the westbound side and M-99 ramps. Surface course on the eastbound side of the freeway and ramps will be completed next season.
M-99 bridge deck repairs over I-94 have been completed for the season and the road has been reopened.
I-94 traffic between the west county line and Concord Road is currently in its winter configuration. All lanes, shoulders and adjacent ramps are open to through-traffic for the winter.
The second seasonal shutdown for the I-94 project will be from Dec. 15, 2023, through Feb. 29, 2024. During shutdown, no roadwork can take place. All travel lanes will be restored to their original configuration. All entrance and exit ramps will be open, as well as all intersecting roadways and interchanges.
