I-94 Project Update: Single Lane Closures and Grand River Bridge Construction

(April 28, 2020 11:16 AM) Single-lane closures will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-94 throughout this week and the following weeks and the I-94 Construction Project continues. Single-lane closures will be utilized from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. from M-60 to Sargent Road to accommodate road and bridge construction activities.

In the upcoming weeks, work will continue on the westbound I-94 bridge over the Grand River. Work on the bridge will consist of installing false decking and tying deck steel. Crews will continue reconstructing westbound I-94 by placing the hot mix asphalt (HMA) separator layer for the new concrete roadway on westbound I-94. Additionally, from Elm Avenue to Sargent Road, the contractor has placed one lane of eastbound on the westbound roadway, while maintaining one lane of eastbound on the eastbound roadway. They have now begun to mill the right lane of eastbound and have begun to perform pavement repairs. Once repairs are complete resurfacing of the lane with HMA will follow. From M-60 to Lansing Avenue, the contractor is scheduled to begin HMA resurfacing in the right lane of eastbound I-94 late this week.

Maintenance of traffic for this upcoming week will include, traffic being maintained on I-94 with a “split-merge” configuration and reduced speed zones along I-94 between Sargent Road and Elm Avenue. Traffic will be maintained between Elm Avenue and Lansing Avenue with shoulder closures and reduced speed zones. The Cooper Street to westbound I-94 entrance ramp will be closed until the Spring of 2020.

There will be a virtual public meeting on May 7 at 1 p.m. regarding the upcoming reconstruction and widening of I-94 from near the Airport Road interchange to just west of the eastern US-127/I-94 interchange in Blackman and Leoni townships in Jackson County beginning in 2021.
