(June 17, 2021 6:18 PM) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the City of Jackson has more ENERGY STAR-certified buildings than any small city in the nation.  The ranking confirms Jackson’s commitment to providing building owners and managers with the technical guidance, best practices, and training they need to make their buildings more energy efficient, save money, and reduce carbon emissions.

The EPA announced that it gave ENERGY STAR certifications to 50 buildings in Jackson last year, more than any other community of its size across the country. Cities are ranked on the list according to how many buildings in their area achieved ENERGY STAR certification in 2020. Buildings can receive this special certification when they take certain measures to reduce energy waste and receive an ENERGY STAR score based on these actions.

This is the second consecutive year Jackson has topped the EPA’s ENERGY STAR ranking for small cities. “The City is thrilled to have this honor. More work is underway in our City government to make sure more buildings are energy-efficient and we build green infrastructure,” said Mayor Derek Dobies.  “This really reflects the close collaboration Consumers Energy has with our community businesses and organizations.”

“We are thrilled to see our hometown is again #1 in the nation!” said Lauren Youngdahl Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president for customer experience. “Consumers Energy has helped Jackson buildings to become ENERGY STAR-certified as part of our work to ensure businesses reduce their energy waste and lower their bills. Together, we are working to make our 2040 net zero plan a reality – and we appreciate that the City of Jackson is leading the way!”

The JTV Building received the ENERGY STAR certification for the second consecutive year.
