(May 2, 2020 10:55 AM) Each year, Jackson College recognizes the importance of its employees with annual employee awards. Presented virtually this year, Jackson College congratulates the winner of the 2020 Outstanding Staff Member Award, Jonathan Ponagai.
Jonathan Ponagai is a Jackson College alumnus who found not only a career but a love of learning when he returned to College.
Working in computer repair since 1999, he was successful but found he was not truly happy. However, he lacked the tools to make a change. He enrolled at Jackson College to finish his associate degree.
“I’d say it was challenging at first, but then I discovered I had a passion for it, and now I love it. I definitely consider myself a lifelong learner.” He expected to compete a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in December.
Ponagai has worked with the College for four years in information technology. As database & Internet systems coordinator, his duties include the creation and maintenance of student, faculty, and staff accounts, managing the online learning platform, system administration and more.
Receiving the award was unexpected and humbling. “I love my job for several reasons. I am passionate about education and believe that it is the best vehicle for people to better themselves; thus, I find a great deal of meaning in serving others,” Ponagai said. “The challenges of meeting the needs of our students and faculty are interesting and can often make a difference. I also love all the opportunities I get to be involved at various levels of the institution where I can bring my technical insights and learn from others, working to deliver our promise to change lives together.”
He is married to his wife, Casey.
